Trying to pick a girls name and here's the shortlist... I know a few of these some people either love or hate. I don't want to pick something too of the moment but I don't want something boring either... which would you pick? I have a son with a very classic name... Happy for other suggestions too.

Cleo
Jemima
Astrid
Blossom
Tulip
Agnes
Lavender
Celine

You really have to think carefully about what teasing names kids will use - Aubrey will turn into Strawberry!

PinkieTuscadero · 14/03/2019 22:49

Oh no! Not the dreaded Strawberry!!! Grin

@bridgetreilly Annis... i can definitely think of an unfortunate nickname for that poor child Hmm

If you like Eleanor (I love it) you could go for Lena or Nora for short rather than Ellie (which I also would have wanted to avoid! I had two boys though 😄)

HoHoHolyCow · 15/03/2019 19:06

I also love Astrid and Cleo

PorridgeLove · 16/03/2019 02:30

Celine is a great name. I am not so crazy about the rest.

Raisinbrain · 16/03/2019 03:23

They're all nice. Unusual but in a good way.

Pemba · 16/03/2019 05:37

I see you've decided against Blossom which is great as it sounds like a horse or a cow. Tulip is quite strange, I mean the flower is lovely but the sound of the word isn't. Lavender is really old lady, and could lead to the unfortunate nicknames 'Lav' and 'Lavvy'. Agnes is fairly old lady too, and sounds very harsh. It's that 'ag' sound, I also dislike Agatha and Morag for the same reason.

I do like your other choices though. Really like Jemima actually. Another unusual flower name you might consider is Fuchsia ? Or Clover, Marigold?

Pemba · 16/03/2019 05:38

For Eleanor you don't have to use Ellie, could be Nell, which is really nice.

Pemba · 16/03/2019 05:44

Oh sorry, I see your DP vetoed Marigold already. Should have RTFT.

HeronLanyon · 16/03/2019 05:52

Cleo - like it a lot
Jemima - a bit ‘cutesy’?
Astrid - really like this name.
Blossom - for an adult this seems childlike to my ear unless you are black in which case to my ‘white ear’ it makes much more sense for an adult woman - has more cultural familiarity - think this is a thought provoking response to the name hmm
Tulip - slightly similar response to blossom. Like this name.
Agnes - like it but do sometimes think it is ‘ugly’ but I rather like some ‘ugly’ names.
Lavender - just no
Celine - too many potential misspellings/missayings for me to immediately say yes I think.

Congrats op.

borntobequiet · 16/03/2019 05:58

Go for it and just call your child Marmite.

borntobequiet · 16/03/2019 05:59

Sorry, that was far too flippant. Audrey is very pretty, unusual and classy.

Ellenborough · 16/03/2019 06:13

Lavender would be a mistake as she will be called Lav and Lavatory.

Blossom is very old fashioned but not in an old lady chic way.

All the others are acceptable, some people willl hate them but you get that with every name. Even the boring classics. People will hate them on account of being boring classics.

Agnes would have been completely dreadful 20 years ago but it’s funny how names gradually become acceptable once there are a few around. From your list like Jemima and Celine best.

mathanxiety · 16/03/2019 06:27

I like them all except for Celine, Blossom, Tulip and Lavender.

I love Helena too, and Audrey.

Celine makes me think of snail slime. Don't know why.
Little miss Lavender will definitely get the NN Lav.
My entire English class was once called a bunch of tulips by our teacher, in a moment of exasperation. I have used the phrase myself ever since.
Blossom makes me think of cakes to celebrate the start of your periods.

Love Cleo, Jemima, Agnes, and Astrid.

Love Greta and Susannah suggested by a PP.

Suggestions:
Dinah
Elfrieda
Aphra
Agatha
Josephine
Tess
Hazel
Leonora

Zogsyoungersister · 16/03/2019 15:17

@Pemba & @HoHoHolyCow you're right and the nicknames you suggest for Eleanor are totally lovely. I just read so many MN threads where people are told that they can't control what their child's name gets shortened to!Confused

@mathanxiety thanks, yes I really like Agatha & Josephine!

Thanks everyone actually, people have been far far nicer about the list than I thought. It's going to be soooo hard choosing just one. Maybe I'll go for 8 middle names WinkGrin

Also hahah re the "bunch of tulips" comment, that's hilarious!!

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2019 15:34

I do think that Blossom, Tulip and Lavender are Jersey cow (or hen) names, sorry op.

behindlocknumbernine · 16/03/2019 16:55

I love Astrid. I am Dutch and it was a popular name when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s.

TOADally · 16/03/2019 18:29

I love all of your names, plus Orchid!

If you're after any more...

Flower names:
Lilac
Ammi
Malope

Zinnia
Flora
Clover

Others:
Serena

MBDBBB · 16/03/2019 19:32

I love Jemima but know quite a few. There’s a lavender in my son’s class-I don’t love it but I don’t think she gets called Lav!

My daughter is called Flora!

Dipi1979 · 18/03/2019 15:35

@zogsyoungersister, Marguerite probably wouldn't sound too Spanish, as it's French... 🤓🤓🤓🤐🤐🤐🙄🙄🙄

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 18/03/2019 15:41

I know a young Tulip. It's a lovely name.
I also like Jemima, Astrid & Celine.
How about Xanthe, Citrine or Bracken?
