Boy name Conan?

So we are in the midst of an implosion thinking of a boys name for our first born due in 5 weeks. We have suddenly got cold feet about our top 3... so OH has suggested Conan. Now I know the reflex is “the barbarian” but aside from that I think it might actually be a great name. It means little wolf in Irish which I also like. My question is... is the barbarian reference too much to overcome OR is it ok these days and the kid or his peers probably won’t have any idea who Conan the barbarian was anyway?

I wouldn’t, but that’s just my preference. I’m Irish and don’t know any Conan's. What about Conal it’s softer?

Redskyandrainbows67 · 04/03/2019 23:19

No.
Conal or Conrad much nicer

Whoops75 · 04/03/2019 23:20

Also Irish, prefer Conal too

I am also Irish. So I’m not trying to culturally appropriate! But thank you for the advice . I think you’re all probably correct!

I'm in Ireland & I've only ever met one Conan, who's in his early 20s. I don't mind the name, though I do prefer Conal.

StellaRae · 05/03/2019 13:43

Don't like it sorry. I prefer Conal or Conor/Connor

I'm not Irish so not sure about the pronunciation - would it be Conn-an or Coe-nan? If the former, I think it's okay and I like your explanation of the meaning of the name. If the latter, that immediately makes me want to add "the barbarian".

Oh god, I LOVE this name!!

I also like Coran, because I knew an actual real life hero with this name and he was sexy as hell! 😂

SumAndSubstance · 05/03/2019 18:34

I think the barbarian (bad) and Arthur Conan Doyle (good) which leaves it neutral on connotations. As a name in itself I think it’s... okay. If you love it, I think it’s usable!

Love it, although so think barbarian but Isa that an age thing?
