Girl name list advice

Heleny332 · 01/03/2019 18:25

We are expecting our baby in a fortnight, we don't know the sex but have more or less decided on a boys name. The girl choice is more difficult and our list is still quite long. Please could you let me know what you think of them and any others you think we might like? My husband likes very popular names like Isla or Ella wheres i would rather have something more old ladyish like Maude or Martha. The list is definitely a compromise of our tastes!

Surname is 3 syllables starting with R and we may not give a middle name as we would rather have a family connection and nothing is standing out so far.

Emmeline
Esther
Elsie
Iris
Lily
Sadie
Charlotte
Ivy
Eliza
Grace
Megan

Emmeline - No. I prefer Emma.
Esther - nice but Esther Rantzen and Esther McVey put me off.
Elsie - no
Iris - no
Lily - no
Sadie - no
Charlotte - yes
Ivy - no
Eliza - ok
Grace - ok
Megan - just Meg is nicer.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/03/2019 18:34

I love Sadie.

How about

Nancy
Tessa
Iona
Lara
Dora

NuffSaidSam · 01/03/2019 19:18

I personally can't stand the old lady name fad that is currently dominating baby naming. I don't like Elsie or Ivy.

Charlotte, Lily, Grace and Megan seem a bit boring. But good, quite timeless names.

I don't like Sadie or Esther or Iris. No real reason, just not my taste.

Eliza is ok.

My favourite from the list is Emmeline. I think it's lovely. I do think it might be super popular in a few years though. I think it's on the way up.

How about:

Margot
Katherine
Elizabeth
Isobel
Sarah
Evelyn
Evangeline

Quietplace19 · 01/03/2019 19:18

Emmeline - too harsh unless her nickname is emmie
Esther - sorry this is such an ugly sounding name
Elsie again too old fashioned... I wouldn't want to be called Elsie
Iris ok but I think of eyes
Lily love it
Sadie hate it
Charlotte I'm biased but I love my name. Always got lots of compliments
Ivy not a fan
Eliza quite like it
Grace lovely!

Megan nice too

Love Esther

Bellaposey · 01/03/2019 19:58

Favourites are Emmeline, Charlotte and Eliza. Lovely list.

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 01/03/2019 20:06

From your list definitely Sadie followed by Grace and then Eliza.

17caterpillars1mouse · 01/03/2019 20:15

Emmeline - beautiful name bit I worry she would get lost in a sea of Emily's and Emilia's. It feels classy but has Emmy as a more fun /young nickname

Esther - I really like it

Elsie - I thought I liked it until everybody started nn my daughter Elspeth Elsie and I realised I'm not that keen. Feels too cutesy even for a baby

Iris - beautiful short and sweet name, makes me think of the goo goo dolls song which I like

Lily - a bit meh. I love Lillian though

Sadie - pretty

Charlotte- nice name and although people says it's popular I only know of one young Charlotte

Ivy - nice but i prefer some of the other names

Eliza - I like it
Grace- nice but very popular
Megan - it's just ok

I will suggest

Ottilie
Matilda
Rose
Abigail
Clara
Sophie
April

OpiesOldLady · 01/03/2019 20:18

From your list I like Esther and Sadie.

What about Sally or Verity?

FranklinTheCat · 01/03/2019 20:18

I love Emmeline! Also like Iris, Charlotte, Grace and Eliza from your list.

How about:

Mabel
Florence (it's popular and vintage!)
Susannah

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 01/03/2019 20:21

BlueMerchant · 01/03/2019 20:22

Love Grace.
Like Emmeline
Like Esther
Like Sadie
My favorite= Eliza Grace

MMama18 · 01/03/2019 20:29

My favourite from your list is Emmeline, but it is one of DD middle names 😁 be wary though people often mishear it as ‘Emily’. A strong, elegant, beautiful name though IMO.
I also love Eliza xx

Sophronia · 01/03/2019 21:57

Esther is my favourite from your list. Biblical, classic but underused.

JustAnotherMillennial · 01/03/2019 22:36

Emmeline - seems a bit fussy to me, much prefer Emily
Esther - alright
Elsie - not really my cup of tea, but one of the better 'old lady' type names
Iris - quite like, my favourite flower name but seems to be growing as another popular flower name.
Lily - no, no, no. Done to death is an understatement.
Sadie - very beautiful but I am put off because my mum always use to sing 'Sadie the cleaning lady' when she came to my bedroom to clean!.
Charlotte - again done to death, nice name though.
Ivy - not particularly keen but its ok, very popular now - seems to be another faddy flower name.
Eliza - really nice, prefer this to Eliza.
Grace - lovely name but popularity would put me off.
Megan - Have loved Megan for many years, very popular when I was at school (born early 90s) so DH vetoed as it was dated but I convinced him to use it as a middle name for DD.

I like most of your name, especially Ivy and Sadie. My niece is called Elise which I really like and prefer to Elsie.

chocolatelog · 01/03/2019 23:52

I like Elsie and Sadie

manicinsomniac · 02/03/2019 11:46

I think it's a lovely list

Emmeline - quite pretty. Not one of my favourites.
Esther - quite like it though it seems a bit formal/stuffy somehow
Elsie - sweet and pretty
Iris - love it. Beautiful and elegant.
Lily - pretty but so overused
Sadie - love it. Still a bit funky and unusual.
Charlotte - love it. Very popular but timeless.
Ivy - really like it.
Eliza - not keen for some reason.
Grace - really like it. Very classy and timeless
Megan - not keen.

I would go for Sadie or Iris - perhaps with Grace as a middle name
Sadie Grace [Robertson]
Iris Grace [Robinson]
Grace Ivy [Ramsbottom]
