Can you wonderful people help me?

Planning a novel and I'm struggling with one of my character names.

She is the daughter of a Jewish man (British/Welsh Jewish family for a couple of generations but also Jewish by religion though not Conservative) and a man with Irish roots but his family has lived in England since his grandfather's generation. He is less traditional than his partner but tends to yield to his point of view over his own.

She is an active outdoorsy child. I'd like her to have a name that is pretty but can be shortened to a more unisex nickname.

She has a brother called James and their surname is Felvel.

It being fiction it also needs to be an easy to read/pronounce name.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Esther?

RayaJambalaya · 28/02/2019 23:49

Oh wait... That can't really be shortened to a unisex name!

How about Ariella. Its a Hebrew name that could be shortened to Ari.. Which I think could be unisex!

Frieda?

Devorah (Dev)

Elisa (Eli)

Gabriela / Gabrielle (Gab / Gabi)

Ariel / Arielle / Auriella (Ari)

Galia (Gal)

Giovanna (Gio)

Rachel (Rae)

Tamara (Tam)

Salome (Sal)

Samara (Sam)

Freeda/Freida - Fred/Freddie
Matilda - Matt/Matty
Both traditional Jewish names.

Go Welsh and have Menna? Not shortened but strong name and phonetic so no issues with pronouncing it.

Thank you for all your suggestions!

I'm torn between Tamara, Samara and Arielle/a

I liked Matilda too but I have a minor character called that.

Jemma? Pronounced Yemeema if Hebrew version.

NeverSayFreelance · 01/03/2019 20:35

Winifred shortened to Fred also works :)

Jammiebammie · 01/03/2019 20:38

Abigail - (abi/abs)
Laura - (Lau/Loz)
Leanne - (lee)

RayaJambalaya · 01/03/2019 23:35

Personally I think Ariella goes better with James more than Tamara or Samara!

RavenclawWriter · 02/03/2019 01:39

Yes I think you're right. And I think I'm more drawn to Ariella. Hits the right tone I think.

Thanks all!
