Middle name for a Wilf or Herbert

Mangotango123 · 24/02/2019 20:47

We are expecting our first baby. We’re all sorted on the girl names and like either Herbert (nn Herbie or Bertie) or Wilf for a boy. We are a bit stuck on a middle name for either.

Some ideas we have had are:
Wilf Rupert
Wilf Hugo
Wilf Louis
Herbert Oliver
Herbert Louis

Would really welcome some ideas/suggestions. Thank you so much x

I know youre choosing between the two but Herbert is lovely and a lot lot less common than Wilf now. Herb is also a wonderful nickname!

Herbert Samuel
Herbert George
Herbert Finn
Your two suggestions are also really nice .

Wilf Richard
Wilf Robert
Wilf James
Wilf David

Wilf feels very incomplete and I think the middle names kind of...accentuate that? Wilfred might be better?

I prefer Herbert to either though, and Herbert Oliver would be my pick of the two you've chosen. I think it flows beautifully.

If I saw Herbert Louis I’d think oh cool a Jazz fan ! I love Herbie Hancock & Louis Armstrong so wouldn’t mind the link but just mentioning as it may or may not bother you

So my vote is Herbie !

Isn't Wilf short for Wilfred?

Wilfred James

Herbert George

Ricekrispie22 · 25/02/2019 05:47

Wilf Alexander
Herbert Arthur
Herbert William

RJnomore1 · 25/02/2019 05:49

Herbert the pervert a la family guy?

Please stick to Wilf(red)!

Wilfred Owen (lovely nod there too)
Wilfred George

Antonin · 26/02/2019 14:52

Can also be spelt Wilfrid. Olderspelling was Wulfrid.
To me Herbert is a nerdy name as in “He’s a right Herbert “

Antonin · 26/02/2019 14:53

All your suggested middle names go well withWilf

Mangotango123 · 26/02/2019 15:19

Antonin thank you.

We were going for Wilf as a stand-alone name as I didn’t want him to have nn Fred or for this part of the name to be adopted. Your suggestion of Wilfrid is food for thought.

Myles?

BlueMerchant · 26/02/2019 15:26

Wilfrid Owen is very nice. Prefer the Wilfrid to Wilfred.

HennaLights · 26/02/2019 15:30

Wilf reminds me of the character from the Oxford Tree Reading scheme. Herbert is a lovely choice for a first name and the nn are lovely.

You could also have Herbert as a middle name.

Herbert George
Herbert Louis
Herbert Arthur
Herbert Edward
Herbert Francis
Herbert Joseph
Herbert Geoffrey

ParisWilton · 26/02/2019 15:36

Wilf Orlando

GahWhatever · 26/02/2019 15:37

Go for Herbert or Wilfred (the only current Fred I can think of is the French maitre'd on First Dates and he is lovely: see the road trip series he did with Gordon Ramsay.

Either name will go well with a strong short name:
John, James, George, Ralph etc

Wilfred or Wilfrid are great names.

Wilf sounds like an elf.. it's not a standalone name imo.

Stpancras · 26/02/2019 15:48

I have a Wilfred Fox - we get tons of compliments!

sunshinedaisy248 · 26/02/2019 19:03

@Mangotango123 my partner is called William and he gets Wilf a lot. His middle name is Joseph

daisypond · 26/02/2019 19:09

Wilf is odd as a standalone name. Wilfred is great.

SlinkyDinkyDory · 27/02/2019 11:11

If you're really set on Wilf or Herbert then please give him a good middle name that he can use/change to for everyday use if he wants to.

Mangotango123 · 27/02/2019 11:24

Don’t think I’d be able to, given as apparently giving a first name is already out the realms of our capability in that regard.

Moving forward, helpful and positive comments only please.

X

I think Herbert is a great name. The one I knew was usually called Bertie.

RubyRed85 · 27/02/2019 11:51

I love Wilf Louis- ignore all the unhelpful comments... I know a baby Wilf (not sure if that's his full name or not as just a friend at playgroup) by he suits his name perfectly & I love it just as it is.

WhereIsMyTVRemote · 27/02/2019 14:01

Herbert is really cool OP. No-one watches family guy anymore and every name has a negative connotation in some way shape or form. I wouldn't worry about it.

It is certainly the more uncommon of the two as Wilf is soaring up the charts, but not unusual enough to be weird. I think if I had another I'd love a little Herb/Bertie!

Wow, those are very posh names.

Charles? Armadillo?
