Love these boy names so much but no one else does I know they are dated but come on Alan's a lovely name is it not? Confused

Peter? Simon? Arthur has been successfully been reintegrated into relatively normal names.

calpop · 16/02/2019 15:41

Alan could be due a comeback. Terry, no way, hideous. I kniw a couoke of primary aged Pauls, which sounded weird when they were babies but ok now.

Nigel, Richard, Keith and Simon should be firmly left with Terry in the 70s where they belong

Ohhgreat · 16/02/2019 15:46

In case no-one has realised, you do know what Alan is an anagram of, yes?
I actually like Jimmy and Terry!

thegreylady · 16/02/2019 16:17

My cats are Trevor and Colin 🙂
I quite like both Alan and Terry. Alun the Welsh spelling is nice too.

Jaz32 · 16/02/2019 18:07

I know a 9 year old Alan. No young Terry tho. Jimmy is fine, know a couple of young Jimmys.

Stinkytoe · 16/02/2019 18:24

My son is James, he was supposed to be called James but is mostly Jim or Jimmy

Twisique · 16/02/2019 19:26

Alaric
Wulfric
Alain
Declan

Jim is a great name!

LordPickle · 16/02/2019 19:44

Alan is lovely but Terry is dreadful. Terry sounds like a dodgy bloke.

MikeUniformMike · 17/02/2019 14:36

Alun isn't a welsh spelling of Alan thegreylady. It is pronounced Al-in, as is Alyn.
Some people use it as a different spelling but they're really just mispronouncing it.

Longdistance · 17/02/2019 14:39

As long as your surname isn’t Key or Chocolate Orange you’ll be fine.

EdWinchester · 17/02/2019 14:41

Both awful.

ChairmanMiaow123 · 17/02/2019 14:55

@DuggeeHugs

Why do you like that spelling?

Unless you'd want it to be pronounced 'al-ah' - fraçais-style.

DuggeeHugs · 17/02/2019 15:00

Because I like that pronunciation @ChairmanMiaow123 and I also find the spelling 'comfortable' for want of a better explanation Smile

ChairmanMiaow123 · 17/02/2019 15:43

That's good enough for me, DuggeeHug. 😉

Lay off the Alans! My dad is an Alan and has always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with his name, especially from the mid-90s onwards when Partridge came along.

I tried to make him feel better about it once by pointing out that there was a nomadic tribe called the Alans who were around at the same time as the Vandals and Goths. He glumly said "I bet nobody was running away in terror because the Alans were on their way. I doubt if they ever properly sacked anything." He may have a point, but it's still a nice name!

MargueritaPink · 17/02/2019 19:09

I would go with Alen. Same lovely sound but it looks more modern with the different spelling

No it just looks like a spelling mistake.

I don't see a problem with Alan. It's much nicer than Kai or Jayden and the like.

MargueritaPink · 17/02/2019 19:15

Alan Cumming
Alan Alda
Alan Turing
Alan Rickman
Alan Dershowitz
Alan Arkin

hipposarerad · 17/02/2019 19:23

Nothing wrong with Alan, but I'm biased because it was my dad's middle name - except his was spelt Allan.

Then again I might not be best placed to comment because my dad's first name was Derek, which I love but I think is universally despised (it's still DS2's middle name though).

MargueritaPink · 17/02/2019 19:29

Peter? Simon? Arthur has been successfully been reintegrated into relatively normal names

Don't forget Neil, Ian, Trev, Adrian and Jeff!

How about Paul, John, Barry, Gary, Dennis?

Failing to see what is wrong with any of these names. There are some awfully narrow-minded people on MN.

MikeUniformMike · 17/02/2019 19:49

I don't think that Derek is that bad because I know 2 nice ones. I wouldn't choose it though.

AlliKaneErikson · 17/02/2019 20:02

Alan is my DF and DFIL! It’s better than Terry and I do think it may ‘come back’ at some point..maybe not quite yet.

paperandfireworks · 17/02/2019 22:46

Brilliant names.

123Flopsy · 18/02/2019 12:30

Alan is a lovely name. People know lots of older Alans hence the association. As soon as they meet a young Alan they'll lose this association. Alan makes a refreshing change from all the Alfies and Archie's!

I also like Terence a lot.

daisypond · 18/02/2019 15:42

I know a teenage Terry. I like Alan - I prefer it to Terry.
