Love these boy names so much but no one else does I know they are dated but come on Alan's a lovely name is it not? Confused

Grin Alan may be a lovely man... but to name a baby Alan....it's just not something acceptable in today's society. I like TerryWink

TheVanguardSix · 15/02/2019 18:21

Alan is a lovely name.
My FIL was an Alan and such an amazing person. And my friend's little boy is Alan (he's going on 6). I remember being a bit Hmm when I first met her and then baby boy called Alan because it really hit me that it's a name you don't hear at all anymore. But it totally works.

Terry is a bit of an old bloke's name, however, every single Terry I've ever known has been wonderful!

Stinkytoe · 15/02/2019 18:23

Alan could go by Ali which is pretty cute

SoupDragon · 15/02/2019 18:28

I worked with an Allen which doesn't seem as old as Alan for some reason.

lolfun · 15/02/2019 18:29

My husband is an Alan. He is below 30 and was teased a lot growing up. He was also known as Anal as it's an anagram of Alan. He loved that! Just to be aware.

I like Terrance though and Terry.

starkid · 15/02/2019 18:32

Alan for me is this rodent's mate

And Terry is this fish

But they may be niche connotations, I admit Grin

Threewheeler1 · 15/02/2019 18:33

Cookit
Shit, I forgot! That's a corker Grin

fishonabicycle · 15/02/2019 18:34

Nooooo! Don't do it!

sweetsaltypopcorn · 15/02/2019 18:35

I teach a 14 year old Allen.

At first, I thought 'Allen?!?!' but now it's just normal; it's just his name.

Threewheeler1 · 15/02/2019 18:36

My grandad was Terry, and my uncle. It is a hard one to get your head round.

GlitterPixie · 15/02/2019 18:38

I work with an Alan in his 20s not a fan of Terry at all

RainbowWaffles · 15/02/2019 18:39

I don’t see the problem. Yes, they are dated and haven’t come back into fashion yet, but the older classics have come back so it’s only a matter of time until we have the next wave of retro names. I can’t wait to see a bunch of babies with names like Lee, Neil, Barry, John, Ian, Steve, Danny, Mike etc. Oh and as pp said, good old Nigel. Better than another bloody Jacob or Lucas. Everything comes back and some point!

MikeUniformMike · 15/02/2019 18:50

I like both of them. Terry/Terence is due a comeback, and Alan should never have gone away.

ritzbiscuits · 15/02/2019 20:36

I like Alain, the French spelling. Maybe a bit poncey though?

Terry, noooo! All I can think of is 70s footballers with sideboards and/or mullets called Terry!

Scoleah · 15/02/2019 20:43

I had an Allan & an Alyn in my class in school.

Who ever put up the pic of terry tibs thank you I forgot all about that Grin I think I've crossed both the names off my list now poor Alan and Terry :( but how about Jimmy? Anyone?

I know a wonderful man called Terry (Terrence) But he is in his 80s! I can’t say I’m a fan of the name though

The youngest Alan I know is about 20, but generally it’s more an old mans name, and not a particularly nice one

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/02/2019 22:09

Terry Crews is a fine example of a Terry.

He looks like my husband haha

I genuinely adore Alan! I’d seriously consider it if I was pregnant

Sophronia · 15/02/2019 23:20

Objectively, they’re ok names! Alan doesn’t sound too different to names like Aaron or Adam, and Terry to Teddy, but they’re dated so it’s hard to imagine them on a baby or child now.

Yaxalot · 16/02/2019 10:30

I would go with Alen. Same lovely sound but it looks more modern with the different spelling.

MorningsEleven · 16/02/2019 10:34

I love Alan and Terry and also Brian. That said, my youngest has a 1950s binman name so my taste may be lacking.

MikeUniformMike · 16/02/2019 12:15

Alen is awful. Allen is good though.

buddy79 · 16/02/2019 14:25

We considered Alan as a middle name (it’s my Dad’s name), wasn’t brave enough but I think it’s due a comeback! Remember reading that it means “cheerful and handsome” in Gaelic (?) which is lovely too.
