My husband and I are Welsh (kinda obvious Wink) and live in south East England and love this for a boys name. Just checking ppl are familiar with the spelling and pronunciation of the name? silly question really.
I've never come across a Dafydd in England before Smile

People in Wales struggle with Dafydd
No, they really don't.

Also - the dd is a "th" as pronounced in "the" or "that", not as in "mouth".

ReaganSomerset · 12/02/2019 21:12

I read it as Daffid. I think if you don't live in Wales, the lad will spend his life correcting spelling/pronunciation.

CosyToast · 12/02/2019 21:17

I knew a Dafydd in Sussex and everyone pronounced it just fine - people asked how to say it, he told us, we said it that way! Not sure why it would be a problem haha

confusedandcrazymother · 12/02/2019 21:23

Um you may want to google dafydd from “little Britain” before naming you son...

Also would you really use a name that has the word “daff” in it?

Just a pointer...

confusedandcrazymother · 12/02/2019 21:24

(Daffyd is the “only gay in the village” from little Britain)

Boobiliboobiliboo · 12/02/2019 21:26

FF in Welsh is a V sound.

Didn’t do David Ginola any harm.

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 12/02/2019 21:27

There are thousands of Dafydds that exist without anyone bringing up Little Britain Confused It's such a non-issue.

Also it's not "Daff". It's pronounced with more of a soft f/v sound. What's a "Daff" anyway, other than short for daffodil?

confusedandcrazymother · 12/02/2019 21:28

But kids will be kids! Any excuse to make fun of a name...even if it’s pronounced as a “v” they will still read “daff”

confusedandcrazymother · 12/02/2019 21:29

Daff is another word for daft.
Like... “are you daft?”

confusedandcrazymother · 12/02/2019 21:30

Of course if you like it go ahead...but that’s what I think about when I see the name daffyd...and this is an opinion board! So that’s my opinion.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 12/02/2019 21:30

Where?!

ReaganSomerset · 12/02/2019 21:32

Not that it's relevant, as there is no Daff on the name, it makes me think of Daffy duck and also the word daft, but I don't think I've ever heard daff used instead of daft.

goose1964 · 12/02/2019 21:34

It's DS2 name. He lives in Manchester and is known as Daf(in English Dav). Most people can pronounce it once it's broken down. However DS has a speech impediment which makes his Name Dafif (or Daviv if you're not Welsh)

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 12/02/2019 21:38

He will get called Daffid. A lot.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 12/02/2019 21:45

And yes completely makes me think of Daffy Duck. Sorry OP.

On the other hand I quite love the name Llewellyn nn Lew for a boy 🤷🏻‍♀️

StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/02/2019 22:09

I love it too but people who can't say Dafydd will not be able to pronounce Llewellyn. They'll say Clue ellin which makes me cringe.

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 12/02/2019 22:16

I'm sorry, but none of the English people I know have issues with pronunciation once they've been told the correct one. They seem to be able to cope with names from other languages too.

Rabbitjam · 12/02/2019 22:22

I think it's a lovely name. dd middle name is Elliw because it's gorgeous and old welsh names will die out if we worry about how non welsh people will manage to pronounce them.

Cherry321 · 12/02/2019 22:22

Dafydd is OK but if you were serious about also considering Iestyn - then I prefer that. Iestyn is awesome.

ErictheGuineaPig · 12/02/2019 22:24

There isn't a 'daff' in the name anyway, it's Dafydd with one f. Go for it op, it's only 2 syllables and really not hard to pronounce.

Yippeee · 12/02/2019 22:25

Nooo one ‘f’ in Welsh is a ‘v’ sound. Double ‘ff’ is ‘f’.

Yippeee · 12/02/2019 22:26

That’s to a pp who said the opposite.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 12/02/2019 22:30

Sorry. Hadn’t spotted the autocorrect to FF before pressing post.

My autocorrect is clearly more influenced by my bra size than the welsh words I type! 😂

trumpdump · 12/02/2019 22:33

Reminds me of Little Britain...

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 12/02/2019 22:34

That's what I was saying Yippeee, if you mean me. Daf isn't Daff as it has one f which is soft f/v.
