My husband and I are Welsh (kinda obvious Wink) and live in south East England and love this for a boys name. Just checking ppl are familiar with the spelling and pronunciation of the name? silly question really.
I've never come across a Dafydd in England before Smile

My first thought was The Only Gay in the Village from Little Britain, but that's only because I've never met one in real life! It's a nice name and I'd know how to pronounce it.

ketchupormayo · 12/02/2019 20:20

Dewi is a cute welsh name! I find it hard to find nice sounding welsh boy names! Girl names are beautiful!

CottonSock · 12/02/2019 20:24

@StopMakingAFoolOutofMe
I said people in Wales, not Welsh people / Welsh speakers. Where I live it's pretty much guaranteed that a lot of people won't know the name as I live in a multicultural area (of wales).

AntsMarching · 12/02/2019 20:24

I love it and know how to pronounce it, but then my husband is Welsh, and it's a name he loves. Never come across one in England. I hope you use it and the nn Dai. If I'd had a boy, he would have been Dafydd just so I could call him Dai.

Welshgirl2019 · 12/02/2019 20:25

Boobiliboobiliboo... Hmmmmm ok?!

My first thought was the same as Calloway's Blush it's a nice name when said correctly (ashamed to say I was also unaware of the correct pronunciation...) but be prepared to say, "No, it's actually Daa-vith" a lot. I really like Dai actually.

I have a Welsh surname which I love and kept after marriage, but fuck me, some people have a complete mind blank when you're spelling it out for them- "Two L's? Are you sure?"

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 12/02/2019 20:25

I have heard the name because of Little Britain. Not a great link but maybe too old to affect your Son? I like the name otherwise.

LynetteScavo · 12/02/2019 20:25

I went to school with A Dafydd and we called his Daffid...I've only just learned that's incorrect!

But then we also called Orlaith ...Orlaith Hmm

Completelyfine · 12/02/2019 20:28

I’m Welsh living in Wales and have never known one nor taught one (teacher for thirty years!) I do know a few Dais short for David.

Bringbackthestripes · 12/02/2019 20:29

One of my favourite names op. I can’t see many people having a problem with it once they are told and, as pp said, we are a multicultural society.

eternalopt · 12/02/2019 20:30

Beautiful name. I know a dafydd - he shortened it to Dav. Lovely fella, so the name makes me smile

origamiunicorn · 12/02/2019 20:30

I like it but I hink non-Welsh people would struggle with the 'dd' and pronounce it Daff-Daff-iddidd but then you can't choose your name based on the fact some people might pronounce it incorrectly. Smile

Iamtheworst · 12/02/2019 20:30

I think it sounds lovely. But I love Welsh names, they sound so different from all the Gaelic names I’m used too. And the correcting the pronunciation is weird. He might end up in the welshiest part of Wales! Also all the Bob and Johns might end up in Iceland sounding out their names!

origamiunicorn · 12/02/2019 20:32

Not sure what happened with the spell check there, pronounce it Daff-id I meant to write.

I mean Daff Daff Daff-id what on earth Blush

pilates · 12/02/2019 20:38

I really like it

TheHobbitMum · 12/02/2019 20:47

As soon as I see that name all I can see is the Little Britain character and think "Is he the only gay in the village?" Grin

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 12/02/2019 20:48

Why is someone saying "DD" in Welsh isn't "th"?!

Petalflowers · 12/02/2019 20:50

Love it

Boobiliboobiliboo · 12/02/2019 20:56

Why is someone saying "DD" in Welsh isn't "th"?

Because it isn’t. (I’m a welsh speaker).

dementedma · 12/02/2019 20:57

i'm in Scotland and as well as my boss "Dai" who frequently gets his name spelled Dia, or Die we have a Geraint. OMG the problems that one causes!

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 12/02/2019 20:57

So am I Hmm

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 12/02/2019 21:00

I have known two Dafydds and live in England! Agree lots of people call them "Dafid"....

Boobiliboobiliboo · 12/02/2019 21:00

Th can be pronounced as in Ithaca. When I say Dafydd the dd is deeper. My tongue is further forward than saying “the” “think” etc.

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 12/02/2019 21:03

I teach Welsh and dd is pronounced like the th in there. It's a soft th, not harsh like thistle.

It's still th though.

walkingtheplank · 12/02/2019 21:08

I had a boyfriend named Dafydd. He was from Anglesey but we lived in London. I don't recall anyone ever getting the name wrong but I suppose I only knew people who had met him and had the name said to them rather than people who'd seen his name written down first. It was abbreviated to Daf (pronounced Dav) but I preferred the full name.

It's a lovely name. Do you have a Welsh surname?
