I quite like Evelina - how do you pronounce it - ever-leena? Could be Eve or Evie for short. It's unusual and there's a famous old novel called Evelina, which apparently inspired Jane Austen.

Celeste is lovely, with a lovely meaning of course.

Mabel is still too old ladyish for me.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/02/2019 16:42

I love Evelina but it gives me the rage that it might be pronounced with and r in it! Where would you get Ever-leena from? It is Ehv-a-leena surely?

Bubastes · 11/02/2019 17:24

Non-rhotic accent

It is Ehv-a-leena surely?

Rhotic accent

Bubastes · 11/02/2019 17:25

I like Celeste. Grown up and quite elegant.

Evelina is okay but a bit fussy.

I really dislike Mabel. A lot.

TurquoiseWeekend · 11/02/2019 17:31

Celeste is gorgeous. I'd love to use it myself but it isn't right with the last name.

Tillygetsit · 11/02/2019 17:35

Celeste is very pretty. Vetoed by my infuriating DH.

BigusBumus · 11/02/2019 17:39

If Evelina would be shortened to Evie or whatever doesn't that make calling her Evelina a bit pointless? Millions of Evies / Eva / Eves.

Celeste is the nicest name, but it is the name of a very recent video game..... and also makes me think of Marie Celeste.

Mabel is ugly.

Names a bit like Celeste to explore might be Celia, Cecilly, Cecilia, Seline, Selina, Serena, Cresida, Estelle, Celestia.

stellarfox · 11/02/2019 18:48

Thanks all! I would say Ev-ah-leena but ever-leena sounds pretty much the same to me at the normal speed you would say it, but yes it might depend on accents.

Probably wouldn’t use Evie! I don’t hate it but I’m not too keen. I think Ev would be cute or possibly Eva

@apolloanddaphne ffs what a surprise, someone else who doesn't realise that that is just another way of spelling the same thing in lots of accents.

confusedandcrazymother · 11/02/2019 18:54

Prefer Celeste out of them all

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/02/2019 19:29

I love Mabel

helpamamaout · 11/02/2019 19:31

Like Mabel, other two sound pretentious (or would round here)

Didyeeaye · 11/02/2019 19:43

I like Mabel best,

StellaRae · 12/02/2019 11:29

Celeste is lovely. Not keen on Evelina or Mabel.

MikeUniformMike · 12/02/2019 11:31

Evelina - Ever Leaner. No
Celeste - Marie. No
Mabel - Maybe.

Calloway · 12/02/2019 11:38

Celeste is gorgeous.

Mabel is terrible. Why is this dowdy name making a comeback?

daisypond · 12/02/2019 13:13

Evelina is famously a children's hospital. I don't like Mabel at all - it's a really clunky name. Celeste is best out of your options - but I'm not wildly keen.

WillowG · 12/02/2019 17:13

I really like Mabel!

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2019 17:15

I really like Celeste, Evelina is OK, and I can't stand Mabel.

RiverTam · 12/02/2019 17:19

Celeste is very nice.

Evelina is OK and I loathe Mabel, so old fashioned and frumpy.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 12/02/2019 19:06

Evelina is a bit of a tragic figure in Dubliners (James Joyce) to me (IIRC).

Celeste's nice.

Not keen on Mabel.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 12/02/2019 19:06

I stand corrected (ish), it's Eveline.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/02/2019 19:07

Celeste is by far the stand out name Smile

thatsmyspace · 12/02/2019 19:08

Evelina is my favourite

Lightofday · 12/02/2019 19:13

Celestine is my favorite name for a girl so I vote Celeste. I don't know if I would pick a name until i saw the kid though. I mean its probably like with pets, sometimes you meet them and you just know the right name for them. Let's just hope she isn't a Patch lol.
