We’re considering Stirling as a name for our boy when he arrives. Would love some anonymous opinions on it.

Stirling is a great name. Go for it!

Bumblebeesmum · 05/02/2019 21:20

It’s awful. Just sounds like currency which is somewhat peculiar for a child.

Sophronia · 05/02/2019 21:28

I like it.

MissMoodyMoo · 05/02/2019 21:38

I really like it!!

But not if your going to move back to the city. That's like calling him Glasgow or London then moving to the city

VenusClapTrap · 05/02/2019 22:02

Yeah. I have a friend who called her son Lucas, and then moved to Cabo San Lucas. Awkward.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 05/02/2019 22:02

I love it!

Redact · 05/02/2019 22:10

I absolutely love it! You should go for it.

explodingkitten · 05/02/2019 22:19

My first thought was Sterling Silver (yes I know it's spelled differently). However, if that doesn't bother you then go for it.

Please can I ask, where are you getting the idea that 'Stirling' is German?

Sterling - with an e - is derived from an Anglo-Saxon (Germanic language) word meaning 'little star'.

But Stirling - with an i - is a word of unknown origin, recorded in early Scots and in Gaelic. Some say it means 'place of battle', others that it means a chief's dwelling and yet others that it is based on an old word for water.

I have a pony called Stirling and we find it hard to say and sound affectionate. Plus shortening it isn't easy. So we find it's a nice name but quite cold and harsh if that makes sense? - the poor thing is called Donkey now as he acts like one lol xx

Nixen · 06/02/2019 22:40

Shite city in Scotland. I wouldn’t

Alyx80 · 06/02/2019 22:41

Love it!

ChaosMoon · 07/02/2019 12:33

Stirling Archer! Do it! Or maybe don't. I love the series but maybe he's not the best namesake. 😂

SumAndSubstance · 08/02/2019 12:42

Stirling Moss for me too! I quite like it, actually, yes.

MelinaM · 09/02/2019 09:17

Stirling, it’s a nice name but just don’t see it working school wise / nicknames etc... unless you’re sending the child to private school like the minibunz has said.

Why not use it as a middle name.

FruminousBandersnatch · 09/02/2019 09:21

I love it.

Avoiding it due to a possibly nickname doesn’t make sense - nicknames never go the way you expect!
