... will people secretly be thinking 'Oscars a dogs name'?

I don't know a single Oscar. There's none in DS1s nursery either. Maybe a regional thing?

No, isn’t it a top 10 name? It’s very popular.

namechangedtoday15 · 24/01/2019 21:00

Just looked it up, Number 8 in top 100 boys names in 2018.

Theonewiththecat · 24/01/2019 21:01

The only Oscar I know is a dog. A very lovely dog.

SPR1107 · 24/01/2019 21:05

That does surprise me.

We're avoiding Olivia for that reason unfortunately, but I do know a good handful. But I've never come across an Oscar.. I'm sure I'll notice them everywhere now.

Names are hard!

I know of a parrot called Oscar and a cat called Oscar. But no dogs.

It's also my sons name so I obviously love it. Know several other Oscars in my acquaintances but no other Oscars in my close circle. He's the only one in his class.

namechangedtoday15 · 24/01/2019 21:23

@SPR1107 looks like it's been in the top 10 since 2015 at least

SoyDora · 24/01/2019 21:27

Yes, has been top ten for a while. I know 4 under 3.

blacktiger · 24/01/2019 21:34

I have a 3yr old Oscar and I absolutely love his name! Dh and I were set on it as our boy name very early on in pregnancy. My best friend was collecting pet insurance data in her work and made a comment about not using Oscar as it's the most popular dog name!
I still went for it though as have had lots of compliments. Friend rarely uses his name though, refers to him by nickname! Hmm

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 24/01/2019 21:44

In our antenatal group 3 out of the 9 babies were named Oscar...

Charley50 · 24/01/2019 22:00

How about Otto?

Chewbecca · 24/01/2019 22:05

No, I wouldn't think dog.
It is a nice name, but I would agree it is popular. I'd estimate about 1 in 30 teenage boys are called Oscar here in Essex.

Couchpotato3 · 24/01/2019 22:08

Seems to be a regional thing. I've only come across one ever (now a teenager) in the South West.

Whatever you call your baby, someone will come up with a daft comment about their name "Oooh, you can't call them that because..." Just pick a name you love and don't worry what anyone else thinks. None of their business!

Yakadee · 25/01/2019 06:22

I have a nephew that's an Oscar and he really suits it. Not dog like at all. There are a few that I know of around 6/7 years age x

Astronica · 25/01/2019 07:14

No, why would they? Great name.

FartnissEverbeans · 25/01/2019 10:34

No, I’ve taught loads of Oscars.

MikeUniformMike · 25/01/2019 10:48

Dog's name.
