Me and DH are expecting our first DD in February. We really love the name Minerva shortened to Minnie. However my sister has pointed out that paired with our surname it will sound like her name is Minerva Mouse, or even worse Minnie Mouse! Do we still go for it?

Minnie is lovely, but we can't comment on the surname without knowing what it is. On a side track I smiled at "its what we called our fandango when we were little". Now you're all grown up you call it your ...fandango Smile

Lol at the poster who has graduated from Minnie to Fandango!!!

What is your surname OP?

MumUnderTheMoon · 22/01/2019 21:07

I wouldn't call a child Minnie because it's also a childish nn I've heard people use for vaginas. My nieces called it their Minnie so ruined forever for me. Maybe not a common issue but if your surname sounds like mouse I'd still stay clear.

Minnie is fine unless your surname is mouse, Cooper, Ha-Ha or magnum.

I bet your surname is Prowse! Minnie Prowse! Dear oh dear.....

No, awful sorry

MyDcAreMarvel · 22/01/2019 22:33

Only if you would be happy calling your ds William nn Willy.

Minnie is a shit name, especially as a shorter term for Minerva when Minerva is lovely. Minerva doesn't need shortening anyway.

When I hear Minnie I think Mouse, teeny-tiny, Cooper, minge - in that order. I know one person who uses Minnie = minge and only met her 4 years ago, I never grew up using Minnie as a reference to my lady parts.

Give your daughter a real name.

My DGM was a Minnie, it was her real name not a nickname. I think it's a really lovely name.

Absolutely love the name Minnie, go for it

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 22/01/2019 23:06

It really depends how much your surname sounds like 'Mouse'

Morgan/Morris etc absolutely fine
House/Mass/Mace.... don't do it!

bridgetreilly · 22/01/2019 23:21

Works for Minnie Driver. I think it's probably fine, OP.
