Alfie for a girl?

I know I'm probably about to get trolled but I would really like some honest opinions on the name Alfie for a girl (short for Alfreda to make it less radical)

Elfrida nn Elfie is lovely.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 20/01/2019 17:05

Alfreda isn’t very nice but it’s the ONLY reason she should ever end up being called Alfie. Otherwise, don’t do it.

Alberta and Albie/Bertie are equally horrible.

SawnUpLooRoll · 20/01/2019 17:11

Oh I totally would! But I'm also set on Bobby (Roberta) for another girl.

CloserIAm2Fine · 20/01/2019 18:30

Absolutely awful and ridiculous

I really hate the trend of boys names for girls, if I met a girl called Alfie I would assume her parents were devastated at not having a boy and regretted having a girl. Nobody ever suggests calling a boy Sarah after all

BendydickCuminsnatch · 20/01/2019 18:35

For some reason I don’t like Alfreda at all, sounds quite dowdy to me, but LOVE Alberta. The grown-up Bertie I know is a very cool woman. Alfie is quite wet IMO.

Smiler88 · 20/01/2019 18:50

No dont do it, your poor kid!

tammytoby · 20/01/2019 19:44

There is nothing masculine about Alfie imo. It's a cutesy nickname for a small child or a dog.

So it works as a nickname for a little boy called Alfred just as well as for a little girl called Alfreda or Elfieda. Or a dog!

Moondancer73 · 20/01/2019 19:47

Charlie is totally common for girls these days so why not

GetOffTheTableMabel · 20/01/2019 19:53

I really don’t like it. It seems very contrived.
Alfreda is just about ok and does, at least, legitimatise the use of Alfie as a nickname but your poor dd would spend her days explain herself. It all seems a bit wearisome and the absolute opposite of cool.

rosyedith · 20/01/2019 20:21

@CloserIAm2Fine why on earth would you assume that lol silly comment

Justus22 · 22/01/2019 13:13

It makes me think of the witch from Wicked the musical. Her name is Alpheba but they call her Alphie. I don't love it for a girl but I think a child makes a name tbh, plenty of my friends kids names I detested but they are beautiful and individuals and my opinions have definitely changed because of the kids. X

I think Alfie for a girl is sweet, spunky, sporty and confident! I can picture her climbing trees, building forts and racing her bicycle. She sounds like she would have a good heart and a soft spot for animals. These are just the images that I get when I hear the name.

Please bear in mind, that I live in the U.S., so the name Alfie (for both genders) is not really common around here.

The first time I heard of it was when I saw Larkrise to Candleford for the first time and it was for a male character. Fell in love with it though!

Good luck on your quest & congratulations! Flowers

Yes, I too think of Alphie from Wicked. Not a bad association though.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 22/01/2019 20:14

tammytoby, I love that book! It was the last birthday present I received from my late father. I found it in his desk, as we were sorting through his things after he died. I don't think it's a bad association either. She was quite the heroine in my eyes. Smile

Pemba · 23/01/2019 10:28

The witch in Wicked is Elphaba with an 'E'. Elphie for short. Good name and great character, but not sure if I'd name a baby this, (unless it turned out green!).

MamaDane · 23/01/2019 10:37

In Nordic mythology an Alf is a supernatural creature similar to elves and fairies, so the name doesn't carry any gender in my eyes. Alfie may be a nickname for Alfred but I personally think it sounds feminine (more feminine than masculine actually), so I think it would be fine for a girl. I wouldn't name my child Alfie, but it's your kid, do as you see fit.

Cbeebiesrehab · 23/01/2019 11:12

I think it’s absolutely fine, Alfie will only be a nickname after all, she can go by Alfreda if she doesn’t like it when she’s older. I think Alphie is quite a cute spelling and makes it more feminine but I’m sure many would disagree with me.

Kokeshi123 · 23/01/2019 11:34

I think it's a twee silly name on a boy and awful on a girl, sorry. Why on earth would anyone do this when there are a million lovely girls' names out there?

And Alfreda is truly dreadful, as is "Alphie"....

Justus22 · 23/01/2019 12:42

No I should've said, I think the Wicked association is a positive too, she's an incredible character-independent, bright, talented, loyal, loving and strong. We all have our prefences @kokeshi123, such a nonsense way to phrase your response, OP welcomed your opinion but it is not a fact that there are a million lovely girls names out there over the one the OP clearly likes. 'why would anyone do this?' Behave.

tammytoby · 23/01/2019 12:50

Alfie, Alphie or Elphie all sound cute and twee for a little girl or boy (or dog). Fine as s nickname but it's not a proper name imo.

tammytoby · 23/01/2019 12:52

Fine as a nickname for Alfreda

Veterinari · 23/01/2019 20:36

Freddie is a much nicer non for Alfreda, esp for a girl
