Alfie for a girl?

I know I'm probably about to get trolled but I would really like some honest opinions on the name Alfie for a girl (short for Alfreda to make it less radical)

OP posts:

Alfreda sounds too much like Alfredo! Which is delicious but not a name for a girl.

Don’t do it.

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/01/2019 10:18

I like it in theory, certainly more thsn i like it in a boy. However Alfie for s boy is just so so popular in my area (they really are everywhere, in every playgroup / park etc) that it would seem unfair to give it to a girl. In the same way i think Noa for a girl is gorgeous but Noah is so popular for boys i jyst dont think it would be fair on the girl

Don't be so silly.

Butterfly84 · 19/01/2019 11:32

I hate Alfie anyway. It's very wet.

I wouldn't use Alfreda and shorten it to Alfie. Your daughter will grow up surrounded by little boys called Alfie.

hotstepper4 · 19/01/2019 11:39

Alfreda is lovely but Freda would be my shortening of that.

I don't think you should call a girl Alfie. What about Allie?

ReginaPhalange89 · 19/01/2019 12:23

I think it's such a popular baby boy name these days that I'd absolutely not use it for a girl. Alfreda is really not a nice girls name, sorry. It's so clunky and kind of reminds me of a freddo chocolate bar 😂

TheVanguardSix · 19/01/2019 12:25

Elfie for Elfreda

HoraceCope · 19/01/2019 12:25

Frederika is nice

Stinkytoe · 19/01/2019 12:25

I don’t like Alfie for a boy and it seems to be very commonplace around here, especially for the ‘naughtier’ children. I certainly wouldn’t go with it for a girl

OlennasWimple · 19/01/2019 12:42

Are you actually asking "What about Alfreda for a girl, nn Alfie?"?

That's a very different question...

No, don't be ridiculous. Why?? When there are so many lovely actual girls' names (more than there are boys' names I think).

And like a pp said, not fair on the child, especially when Alfie is so well known and popular as a boys' name.

Icklepup · 19/01/2019 14:47

No, hate it

BackforGood · 19/01/2019 15:01

NO
It has been so popular for boys in recent years, she would spend her life answering why her parents gave her a boy's name.
Not fair on her.

llangennith · 19/01/2019 15:04

First reaction was "she's joking".
OP would you like to have been saddled with the name Alfie, as a child, teenager and adult? Thought not.
What about Elfreda? It's a real girls' name and can be shortened to Elf.

CantstandmLMs · 19/01/2019 15:06

I like it! I also love Bertie

DramaAlpaca · 19/01/2019 15:13

I hate it on a boy, really dislike it, but for some reason I think I'd quite like it on a girl short for Alfreda Confused

Or maybe I'm thinking of Elfie, short for Elfrida. Which is actually lovely.

tammytoby · 19/01/2019 15:15

Charlie, Alfie, Edie, Evie all sound cutesy and will suit either gender when little. although I'm personally not a fan.

Alfreda is nice for a grown up woman.

Jiggins · 19/01/2019 15:20

Where to start! I'm not a fan of boys' names being requisitioned as girls' names but can look the other way if it's something like Kit, for example.

But Alfie?! Alfie is (best suited to a rotund male bulldog who spends his spare time licking his undercarriage) one of the most popular boys' names of recent years and would be a massive pain in her behind to have to explain her name to people. As she would have to do. All.the.time.

And Alfreda is just so ugly.

blueskiesandforests · 19/01/2019 17:31

By "get trolled" do you mean "get replies which don't gush about the brilliance of my silly name idea" - trolling and disagreement aren't the same.

Its a daft idea - it's not a real full name for either sex, and it's going to be very dated because it became very popular very quickly, and its overwhelmingly used for boys, so your daughter would spend her entire life explaining why she has a boy's name, or explaining that she is indeed Alfie, no she isn't a Transman.... It'll be like being a 40 year old woman called Dave...

There are so many other names...

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 19/01/2019 17:37

I like Alfreda but the fact that Alfie is so popular for boys at the moment would definitely put me off using it as a nn for a girl; having said that I don't think it's completely 'out there' and have seen far worse on the names board so if you love it then go for it!

Like others I prefer Elfreda/Elfie or Alberta/Bertie

NameChange176 · 19/01/2019 17:51

I normally like unisex/male names for girls but I don’t like this, or Alfreda.

If it’s not the unisex aspect that you like but the sound of it how about Althea or Effie? Similar but much nicer imo

SilverySurfer · 19/01/2019 18:01

Don't do it, unless you are going to name a boy Sally or Fiona. What is it with this stupid current rage of wanting to give girls boy's names?

It'a not 'yoonique' or fun or clever, just stupid. Change your own name if you like it so much.

PippilottaLongstocking · 19/01/2019 18:03

I know an Elfie short for Elfrida, could that be an option?
