DH chose daughters name, opinions please

I know it's two late to change my daughters name, and this is a pretty pointless post, but it will just confirm what I think people feel about my daughters name or not. DH named her.

I was very ill all throughout my pregnancy and after birth. DD didn't have a name for 4 weeks after birth, it was nearing the time to register her. I said that DH could name her. I was expecting him to let me know what he's decided before he registered her so I can give it the thumbs up or not. I wasn't going to be extremely picky, time wasn't on our side.

A few days later he came home and said that he registered DD. I asked what name he picked and he has picked Mackenzie-May (not actual spelling). I could write a whole page on how I felt about him registering her without even letting me know there was an appointment, or even letting me know her name! But this isn't a rant I was just wondering everyone's views on her name. Not something I would of gone for imo, but i now can't imagine her not being Mackenzie.

I'd go for just May

Shadow1234 · 16/01/2019 00:39

I really like the name (without the May), and think Kenzie as a nn is lovely.

timeisnotaline · 16/01/2019 01:08

Nicknames don’t have to follow rules If they are what you feel like calling someone! I can easily see Mackenzie May being called Maisie. My nephew Felix is fixie , Little fix. My friends child Harriet is harts... etc.

Redcrayonisthebest · 16/01/2019 05:42

Oh dear, that is awful and really chavvy. No way would I hire someone with that name. For your DD’s benefit I suggest you at least drop the hyphenated part.

To be honest, if a company or individual was really THAT judgemental and rejected me on the basis of my name alone and didn't bother to find out what o was like as a person I'd consider that I'd massively dodged a bullet! Confused

flumpybear · 16/01/2019 06:17

Personally I'd make May her middle name, as those hyphenated xxxxx-mae names are a bit chavvy (sorry!) also change it to Maisie if that is what you want. I have no real idea, but I think MacKenzie is the correct spelling, albeit you may need to make the k lower case

Sessy19 · 16/01/2019 06:21

@cosmiccomet, what a thoroughly bigoted POV! Do you also prevent your children from associating with children who’s names you don’t like?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/01/2019 06:23

The op asked for opinions sessy.

Not keen myself, definitely drop the -May.

FluffyMcCloud · 16/01/2019 06:28

I’m assuming the May is spelled Mae. I’d drop the hyphen (or scrub Mae completely) as it changes the sound of the name for me. Mackenzie is cute and I like it!

CosmicComet · 16/01/2019 10:06

To be honest, if a company or individual was really THAT judgemental and rejected me on the basis of my name alone

There have been loads of research studies to show that companies DO judge on that basis. White and posh sounding names get more interviews than black or poor sounding names, even if it’s an identical CV with just the name swapped. Companies who need to pick one candidate and can’t decide will even pick the nicest font on the CV or the nicest outfit worn at interview.

I’m sorry, but OP asked for opinions and that name would make me assume negative things about the person’s background. If you asked me is Mackenzie-May a high court judge or on the dole, I’d say the latter.

JosephineHass · 16/01/2019 10:15

I like it.🤷🏻‍♀️ It's a lovely name.🌼

Cosmoa · 16/01/2019 10:20

Love Mackenzie! But I'm with you on not liking the trend of sticking may on the end of a name.

DamnCommandments · 16/01/2019 10:22

Cosmic but if she applied for a job as Mackenzie, she might be mistaken for a man - and men get more interviews than women. I think those unisex names can be useful that way.

I'm not wild about the hyphenation either, but Mackenzie May Jones sounds like a pretty cool name (other surnames are available).

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/01/2019 10:26

I really love classical, strong old fashioned names but as I’ve read through this thread, the more times I’ve seen Mackenzie written down the more I like it.

OP it’s your little girls name now and I think changing it at this late stage wouldn’t be right. I have an 18 month old and he knows and can say his name.

WindyScales · 16/01/2019 10:28

Personally I’d just call her ‘May’ which is a perfectly lovely name in its own right. Then just drop ‘McKenzie’ completely and change it by deed poll.
I think it would be fine to do this as she is familiar with the name ‘May’. In the long run she doesn’t want to be saddled with a name like mckenzie.

ILoveChristmasLights · 16/01/2019 10:36

Mackenzie isn’t a name I’d choose myself (but it’s a VERY short list, so I wouldn’t place much weight on that!) but it’s a nice enough name, nothing wrong with it.

I’d have dropped the -May the minute he walked through the door and offered up my death stare if he used it.

If you want a shortened version I like Mac as a nn far better than Kenzie or any of the others. But if you want something more ‘girly’ I’d go for Maisie.

At 17 months she knows her name, but she’d soon answer to Maisie too. Lots if kids have several ‘pet’ names.

You don’t have to change it by deed poll or anything as long as you’re not using a chosen name for fraudulent reasons. Your passport HAS to match your BC though, so it’s easier to do it by deed poll before you get her a passport, but you can update it in future if she already has one. It’s really NO big deal.

As for DH registering her. I don’t know. It sounds like it was a very difficult time and you told him he could choose, so I’d let it go. I’m a lot more careful about how I phrase things so there’s far less room for error 😖🤣

ILoveChristmasLights · 16/01/2019 10:38

LOL personally I wouldn’t want to be saddled with the name May. I’d FAR rather have Mackenzie (Mac).

Notagainagainagain · 16/01/2019 10:49

I like it. Don’t even mind the May bit.

WindyScales · 16/01/2019 10:53

ILoveChristmasLights
Clearly it’s a matter of taste whether you prefer ‘Mac’ which is a name you need to have a certain personality to pull off, or ‘May’ which is far more classic and traditional. They are totally different styles so it depends on what sort of style the OP likes.

OP
Either way you have it I’d say drop the hyphen!

Madmarchpear · 16/01/2019 10:56

Agree with pp and phase out the mackenzie. It really will label her later on in life. May is feminine and understated. Thank god he didn't spell it Mae!

tammytoby · 16/01/2019 11:08

Does your dd know and recognise her name?

In which case it would be unfair to change it imo

tammytoby · 16/01/2019 11:55

May is very Theresa May imo.

SnuggyBuggy · 16/01/2019 11:59

Could you compromise and get it changed to a properly spelled Mackenzie and have May as a middle name?

RomanyRoots · 16/01/2019 12:03

I can't understand this tbh, it's something parents usually discuss a million times and agree upon.
I understand that you were unable to go but surely you had time to discuss names at some point and have known what he was registering.
You can change it if you want.

Polly99 · 16/01/2019 12:10

It’s not my cup of tea but it really isn’t awful. If the name now suits her, I’d leave it as it is or change it so that the spelling is more standard (if your DH went for something creative) and to ditch the hyphen (as it sounds like you are not really using May anyway). You could even take the opportunity slip in an additional middle name if there’s something you like... your DD would not be aware of any of those tweaks.

RiverTam · 16/01/2019 12:12

Mackenzie is a cool name, I like it. I would just pretend the -May wasn't there.

I can't imagine being married to a man who liked the trend for -May/-Rose etc but that's a different issue!
