Meela. Mila Kunis.

RebeccaCloud9 · 13/01/2019 09:59

@buffalocauliflower (if you're Italian, Laura is Lowra)

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2019 10:00

Those coming to say they’d pronounce it Mile-a or Miller - I hope you’ve learnt it’s actually Meela should you encounter it!

But as with everything, there are variations to the norm. The Mila I know is “Miller”. I don’t know if this pronunciation is to do with her Mediterranean/Yorkshire heritage, but it’s definitely pronounced Miller.

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/01/2019 10:02

@BikeRunSki then the parents of the Mila you know also pronounced it wrong. I’m sure there’s plenty of people walking around saying their names a different way because their parents got it wrong.

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2019 10:04

I’ll let them know, but they seem to have been pretty happy with this pronounciation for the last 10 years. Hmm

ILoveChristmasLights · 13/01/2019 10:07

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

She’s going to have to get over herself VERY quickly. If you pick a name like that you can expect it be pronounced the way you choose about half the time. The rest of the time you have to ignore it and keep saying it the way you prefer and hope people (in general) cotton on. Obviously nursery etc you can ask them to pronounce it the way you prefer.

I’d have said My-lah ‍🤷🏻‍♀️

nocluenoidea · 13/01/2019 10:09

Miller, I know 2 Mila's pronounced this way so struggle to imagine it any other way!

peachypetite · 13/01/2019 10:10

Meela like mila Kunis

ILoveChristmasLights · 13/01/2019 10:12

BuffaloCauliflower.

Wow. It’s very cool to meet the ACTUAL Queen of Name Pronunciation. Who knew? Maybe you could extend your remit a bit and sort out the whole potato, tomato thing too.

🙄

nocluenoidea · 13/01/2019 10:14

@BuffaloCauliflower that's quite an assumption, and maybe it's you who has been getting it wrong! I know 2 Mila's- both of whom are 'Miller'. Try telling them they've been saying their name incorrectly for years. Personally I don't quite see how 'Mi' could be pronounced 'Mee', and it doesn't sound as nice as 'Miller', but maybe that's just because I'm so used to it now

sollyfromsurrey · 13/01/2019 10:15

It could be Mee-lah, My-la or Mill-ah but I would assume Mee-lah or at a push Mill-ah. I would think My-la would be spelt Myla

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/01/2019 10:16

@nocluenoidea it’s pronouned Mee because it’s a Russian name, short for Ludmila (Loodmeela) and that’s how it’s pronounced. It’s not an English name so it’s not pronounced how a typically English word would be

Knittedfairies · 13/01/2019 10:17

@BuffaloCauliflower - would you care to give me the correct pronunciation of Milo?

sollyfromsurrey · 13/01/2019 10:17

Don't you just love people who spell their child's name in an unconventional way and then get pissy for the rest of their lives when people pronounce it the way a normal person would pronounce it based on the spelling Hmm

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/01/2019 10:20

Milo - My-low

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/01/2019 10:20

Milo isn’t a Russian name...

SloeBerri · 13/01/2019 10:26

I’m from a country where it’s popular, it’s me-la but quick on the ‘me’. Sometimes in England I hear a ‘mee’ stress on the first syllable, whereas it’s more evenly pronounced, I find mi-la is a good way to describe it, and I see how with many accents it’s miller

Catandchicken · 13/01/2019 10:34

Another one for Me-la: Spanish name short for Milagros. Actually, I quite like all the pronunciations, so I don't think you can go wrong. Grin

Astronica · 13/01/2019 10:45

Meela

Schmoobarb · 13/01/2019 10:49

I used to think it was Myla but all the ones I know of are pronounced Mee-la so that I guess is the most common pronunciation

If she wants her to be Myla she’d have been better spelling it that way!

daisypond · 13/01/2019 11:02

Mee-la. The one I know is Spanish.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 13/01/2019 11:20

Mill-ah

I’m Australian, it’s quite a popular name here, all the Mila’s in my DC’s classes are pronounced Mill-ah.

That’s the only way I’ve ever heard Mila Kunis pronounced here too, unless on an American show then it’s usually Mee-la.

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/01/2019 11:21

@MrsDrSpencerReid Mila Kunis pronounces her name mee-la. She’s Ukrainian.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 13/01/2019 11:27

What a ridiculously ignorant statement Buffalocauliflower. How do Spanish people pronounce Laura? Very differently to the way British people pronounce it. There are plenty of correct options on how to pronounce names.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 13/01/2019 12:26

Yes I know, I’m just saying that here in Australia with our accent it’s Mill-ah.
