River for a boy?

My husband and I have this name on our shortlist for our little boy. I love it, but I worry that as he gets older it’ll become a bit inappropriate - like applying for jobs and stuff. What do you think?

I like it , but for some reason see it as more of a feminine name.

Til89 · 09/01/2019 12:00

I like it. Nickname Riv is cool.

Lipsticktraces · 09/01/2019 12:19

Makes me think of River Phoenix, so for mr the connotations are quite sad as he died so tragicallySad

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/01/2019 13:35

due to River Phoenix I thin its a negative name

Branleuse · 09/01/2019 13:46

I love it. River Phoenix was such a beautiful soul

WrapAndRoll · 09/01/2019 14:02

It's fine, not especially outlandish these days.

slartybardfast · 09/01/2019 14:07

We had that suggestion given to us lots! But we are called Trent, so there's many funny people around for sure.

I wanted to call him Spike, but everyone said NO.
He's an adult now. What name would he most like?
That's right. Spike.

You'll never get it right

DressingGownPlease · 09/01/2019 14:11

I like it but I would only use it for a girl.

Phebes · 09/01/2019 14:23

I like it. It’s got a calm but cool feel to it. I think it’s fine in professional contexts.

Sophronia · 09/01/2019 14:41

I really like it for a boy but would probably use it as a middle name with something more classic as a first name.

SemperIdem · 09/01/2019 15:01

The only River I know is a boy. I like it

Aquamarine1029 · 09/01/2019 15:13

I love it.

TatianaLarina · 09/01/2019 15:25

I just don’t like naming after celebrities.

Ipanema01 · 10/01/2019 15:22

I like it!

RiverTam · 10/01/2019 15:27

we had it on both our boys and girls list. I would say it's more usual as a girls name but no reason not to have it for a boy.

JesLorDad · 10/01/2019 21:56

I love it for either a girl or a boy.

But I dislike Rivers.

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2019 21:57

Rivers sounds like the gamekeeper.

TigerQuoll · 10/01/2019 23:28

I love the name River, but I would give him something boring as a middle name in case he doesn't like it when he is older, and he can choose to be called by his middle name. Also important that the middle name is something nice and masculine since River can be used on girls too.

E.g.

River Thomas
River James
River George
River Benjamin
River David
River Nicholas
River Samuel

Drogosnextwife · 10/01/2019 23:29

Score it off the list right now.

Icklepup · 11/01/2019 11:23

I like it too :)

holidayarmadillo2019 · 11/01/2019 11:25

I like it

tillytoodles1 · 11/01/2019 11:27

I know a child called Afon, I think it's Welsh for river.

MamaDane · 11/01/2019 11:29

Nice name.
But then again I do like some "hippie" names, like Storm (extremely common for boys in Denmark), River, Summer, Willow, Sunny, Rose, etc.

GiGi18 · 11/01/2019 11:50

I love it, it's on my list for a boy, but think I'll need to convince DH too. He is much more traditional in his name choices.
