We both like Cain for a first name, Douglas for a middle name after DH dad and surname begins with M.

Cain Douglas M.

Thoughts?

just about every name can have negative cpnnections of you look hard enough. just about every name could be connexted to a character too.

how.many harrys are there r ight now? are they all nam ed after Potter?
how about Teds? Charles? so on and so forth.

id not think twice if i met a child called Cain, hell, even Cain wasmt actually called Cain. cain is the English translation, Qayin and Havel were their actual names.

RedDwarves · 08/01/2019 08:00

I really don't like Cain, sorry. Awful Biblical story, which will be many peoples' first though.

Plus it reminds me of "the cane" i.e. the punishment.

I like Douglas though.

HeronLanyon · 08/01/2019 08:00

Op you definitely can ‘win’ and your little boy will no doubt end up with a great name which suits him. Good start wouldnjust be to accept some names have strong connotations which he will have to live with if you choose them. The choice is yours. The name will be his. There are more names without such strong connotations than with. How unlucky your top likes are ‘unfortunate’ names.
Good luck and congratulations.

RedDwarves · 08/01/2019 08:05

Also, Cain's equivalent is not Amelia, it's more like Adolf or Myra.

Amelia has been eternally popular and is a classic name. See also Rose, Theodore, Peter, Fred etc.

Cain does not fit into that group of names. It has never been popular for a reason and is not a classic, despite its biblical history. If you want some other equivalents, you can start with Jezebel.

golddustwomen · 08/01/2019 08:07

I love it! I don't know the bible story so it never crossed my mind when I read your op. Have never read the bible, no one in my family is religious.

CollyWombles · 08/01/2019 08:12

DH is South African and was given 'the cane' now and again. In fact once the teacher that was caning him was quite pleased because he had also caned DH Father. True story.

I like Douglas a first name, DH however did not and that was before we thought about a four letter name in keeping with his family. This is DH first child, my other 4Dc are to my ex husband so ultimately i feel it's only fair he gets to make the final call.

He quite likes Kade.

If I was mythical Cain and knew I would one day be lumped with the likes of Adolf, I would probably not have just murdered one person. I would have probably gathered up all the meat eating people and killed them too. That would at lead justify being put in hitlers league.

Lol it's 2019, it'll only be the parents of your sons friends that might judge your name choice, if anyone would judge infact!

Cain is a lovely name & is actually one that I'm considering for my expected son, just with a different spelling.

If you like it- don't let people put you off.

Ps- I've also been criticised for my choice of baby names as it doesn't match my first sons name which is also biblical (we didn't chose because it was biblical and had purposely changed spelling)

Anyway, it's a really strong name!

michonn · 08/01/2019 08:31

I think Cain is more modern as a first name than Douglas. And Cain Douglas M seems to flow more. But again, yours and DH choice!

CollyWombles · 08/01/2019 08:37

Could you imagine Adolf, Amelia, Myra and mythical Cain sat in a group together.

Hitler: I killed millions of people, how bout you?

Amelia: I killed around 400, tame I know but it was in the 1800s.

Myra: (shuffles and looks a little embarrassed) I killed 5.

Hitler and Amelia side ways glance at each other.

Hitler: Ahem. And you Mythical Cain? You have been around longer than all of us, in books in hotel rooms, tell us, how many did you kill?

Hitler, Myra and amelia all lean forward in anticipation.

Mythical cain: erm Well, shuffle, fidget, cough. Well. Erm. I killed one.

“Lol it's 2019, it'll only be the parents of your sons friends that might judge your name choice,”

Because everyone born after 2019 is ignorant? Bit harsh......

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/01/2019 08:58

Not too keen on Douglas.

It’s currently very popular for puppies, so you might get a canine Douglas when you call him in the park.

michonn · 08/01/2019 09:04

BertrandRussell not at all, I meant that nobody cares anymore! It's very trivial & the world is a lot less of a judgmental place

AgathaMisty · 08/01/2019 09:19

Ooh, Cade is nice, OP! First time I've heard it.

slappinthebass · 08/01/2019 09:26

I really like it. I wouldn't be worried about the origin.

slappinthebass · 08/01/2019 09:35

A lovely girl I went to school with had a son called Cain that sadly passed away and my kids school have a sports cup named after him. It was actually my daughter that initially suggested Cain as the name Cain to her was a lovely popular boy she used to know! We hadn't thought of it before her suggestion but it's the one name so far we both really like with the added bonus of the kids liking it too.

Woah. Actually, I missed this bit. You can't steal this name in this case, unless you've cleared it with the old school friend.

CollyWombles · 08/01/2019 09:52

The first thing I did was clear it with her. I haven't told her I posted on here however sure she doesn't need to see her sons name being ripped to pieces.

SumAndSubstance · 08/01/2019 10:05

You've somewhat missed the point about the Cain story if you just view him as someone who wasn't a very good serial killer. The point is that Cain is traditionally the human who revealed man's capacity for murder and evil by killing his own brother.

You also incorrectly assume that people are saying they don't like the connotations because they're very religious. I don't think this is the case. I find it strange when people use names with strong negative cultural references - Jocasta being one that springs to mind, but I don't imagine that Jocasta necessarily did exist and marry and have children with her own son.
None of this need necessarily matter to you of course and you are free to ignore it as others have done. Cain is certainly a much more common name than Judas, the one being shorthand for murder and the other for betrayal. If you have actually asked your friend for permission to name your child after her dead son, then I don't know that I would go back and tell her I'd changed my mind to be honest!

ThanksItHasPockets · 08/01/2019 10:30

Judas is a much better analogy than Adolf or Amelia.

BertrandRussell · 08/01/2019 10:56

Yes,Judas is an interesting analogy. Presumably nobody would call their child Judas? And he only betrayed one person!

Ethel80 · 08/01/2019 11:04

@CollyWombles I'm confused why you asked about the name if you weren't prepared for people to give their opinions.

If you like it, use it but you asked so you must have some reservations.

Personally, I don't care about the biblical associations but the Cain Dingle thing would put me off a lot. I just don't think it's a very nice name. It doesn't look or sound nice and I don't have any positive associations with it.

I really try not to judge anyone by their name and I'm really not a snob but a lot of people are and the name Cain would conjure up an image of a someone a bit rough and dodgy (adult not child).

I could imagine the Rooney's using it for number 5 now they've moved off K.

Sorry!

SilverBirchTree · 08/01/2019 11:06

I wouldn't do it.

I think it will make you seem uneducated. The bible is such an influential text, even if you are not religious at all, it has influenced culture, laws, politics, literature etc which surround you every day. I don't think you can just set is aside, and ask everyone ever to consider the name in isolation from it. People from all walks of life, not just the religious, will inevitably connect it with the bible, and you'll seem a bit silly IMO.

Also- Maybe don't post on the internet asking for different opinions if you're going to get touchy about receiving different opinions from people on the internet? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Zoflorabore · 08/01/2019 11:13

The headteacher at dd's school has a son called Cain and it surprised me as i think it's very chavvy and she is anything but.

Don't like either name sorry but it looks like your mind is made up regardless of anyone's opinion on MN.
