We both like Cain for a first name, Douglas for a middle name after DH dad and surname begins with M.

Cain Douglas M.

Thoughts?

I know a Kane much better than Cain. Even though you think it's a made up story other people don't

MrsFoxPlus4 · 06/01/2019 22:33

I like it & id use it!

CoffeeRunner · 06/01/2019 22:37

My nephew is called Cain. He is 13 & we are from a church background. Not one person has ever made a negative biblical connection!

My only thoughts of CDM is Cadbury’s Dairy Milk!

Hezz · 06/01/2019 22:38

I can confirm that Cain is a naughty boy name

Wouldn't be my choice as I'm not a Christian and think it's too biblical but each to their own.

Popskipiekin · 06/01/2019 22:45

These “naughty/chavvy names” are so odd. We have a Logan (because we like the name, and wanted a Scottish name), but I see Logan all the time mentioned as a chav/naughty name on mumsnet.
Cain - yes I thought of the bible but also thought Michael Cain(e) which, for me, is a positive connection to make. All names have history, positive and negative. If you like it, go for it. Douglas is lovely. Random, but I thought Seth would also be a nice 4 letter boys name in same vein as Cain, and would go with Douglas. Enjoy your little boy!

Astronica · 07/01/2019 04:27

I think Douglas is great but dislike Cain.

WhirlieGigg · 07/01/2019 04:51

A lot of people have the surname Cain and nobody freaks out about it. Only super religious people will be bothered by your name choice. I think it’s fine.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/01/2019 14:31

I'm completely non-religious, but I would never use the name Cain. It just has too much of a negative connotation.

CollyWombles · 07/01/2019 15:27

One story about one person that murdered one person, you would have to be religious to care about that, or else no one would use heaps of names because sadly a lot of people have murdered one person. Hardly Harold Shipman standards! Grin

For example, amelia is the second most popular baby girl name at the moment. Yet amelia dyer is one of the most famous female serial killers in history, she murdered at least 200 infants in the 1800's! I don't assume anyone calling their new daughter amelia is calling her after that despicable woman however!

Okaaaay

BertrandRussell · 07/01/2019 16:53

It’s not about being religious. It’s about knowing our cultural history.

BertrandRussell · 07/01/2019 16:55

I don’t think anyone would be upset or offended if you call your son Cain. But they may think you were a bit uninformed.

CollyWombles · 07/01/2019 17:01

My country's cultural history began way before Christianity, primarily celtic. Yes they probably would make that assumption as much as I would assume they are a bit daft for thinking Cain is a terrible name that should never be used because it featured in a book as a 'bad character'. They would be as unlikely to care about my assumption as I would theirs.

Anyways aside from the religious aspect which I've already stated doesn't matter one bit to me or my family, the other opinions are a bit chavvy (fair enough!) and nothing negative with the initials which is great because I hadn't actually considered the initials, so thanks for those other opinions too!

It won't do him any harm to be called Cain, I know my auntie got around the connotation slightly by naming my cousin Caine to remove it slightly at least when it is wrote down. I think it's a great name for him, go with what you like.

LearningMySelfWorth · 07/01/2019 17:13

Oh and I'm a practicing Christian who runs uni bible study, volunteers with the sunday school and friday youth group and helps bake and serve in the church cafe and at voluntary events, no one at my church would bat an eyelid at the name.

BatFaced · 07/01/2019 17:14

My thoughts are that there are nicer names out there. It does make me think of Cain & Abel, closely followed by the bloke from Emmerdale. I don't use the word chavvy as a rule but it sort of fits that bill too.

BertrandRussell · 07/01/2019 17:16

“My country's cultural history began way before Christianity, primarily celtic.“

So did everyone’s.

TatianaLarina · 07/01/2019 17:24

If you’re proud of your Celtic history and you dislike Christianity - why not choose a Celtic name - they’re much nicer. It doesn’t really make sense.

I dislike Christianity and while there are names I like - like Gabriel and Jude (solely due to Hardy) - I couldn’t choose them personally because the Christian associations would annoy me every single day.

Isitweekendyet · 07/01/2019 17:27

I love Cain but hate Kane.

I was friends with a lad called Kane in uni and he was a bellend.

I agree, completely ignore the bible's origins! My namesake was a prostitute in the bible so it's good we don't all follow in the footsteps of our originators!

Congratulations to you both on your lovely baby.

PloddingOnwards · 07/01/2019 17:27

I love it

SpeedyBojangles · 07/01/2019 17:34

I like it, though it does remind me of Cain from Emmerdale!

I don't get the whole 'naughty boy' name. It's stupid. A child isn't naughty because of its name. Other children's behaviour should have no bearing on what you want to name your child.

littlemeitslyn · 07/01/2019 17:52

Why are you asking questions then ??

BirthdayKake · 07/01/2019 17:57

It reminds me of McCain and yes, the story in the Bible. BUT if you post choices on here, they'll often get ripped apart. I know mine did 😂

Hezz · 07/01/2019 18:04

Thing is OP, if you ask for opinions then you're going to get them.
