Malene

Anyone have thoughts on Malene for a girl? Pronounced the Danish way which is sort of "Mah-LAY-nuh".

I used to have a colleague with this name and always found it very pretty. DH, however, thinks it sounds a bit Melania Trump-ish which is an association I'd like to avoid.

Any thoughts?

You would be forever tellng people how to pronounce it. I would have thought it was said May-leen

MikeUniformMike · 03/01/2019 18:04

I'd have said it as Mal-een. You will get Mal-enn too. I'd avoid.

MissMarplesKnitting · 03/01/2019 18:06

Isn't it more Marlene then. As in Marlene Dietrich? She was Mar-lay-neh.

MrsApplepants · 03/01/2019 18:07

It’s a nice name but for me, at first glance it looked like Marlene, like Boycie’s wife from Only Fools and Horses. I wouldn’t use it for this reason alone.

giftsonthebrain · 03/01/2019 18:11

Very similar to the French word for mean.

indianbackground · 03/01/2019 18:11

Agree with PP you/DD will need to spend explaining how to pronounce her name.
My guess from reading it would be Mal- een or I might veer towards Mar- Leen even though there is no “r”

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/01/2019 18:13

No. Too much like Melena. Which is poo.

TinselTimes · 03/01/2019 18:21

Could you spell it Marlene? That’s better known for that pronounciation.

Topseyt · 03/01/2019 18:24

I would agree with your DH.

Also, as others have said, your child will have a lifetime of having to explain, spell and correct for other people.

It wouldn't be a name I would use.

DPotter · 03/01/2019 18:28

I agree - you'll be forever explaining how to pronounce Malene. I would have pronounced it Ma-leen.
If you like Mah-lay-nuh, why not use the more usual spelling of Marlene? I know it's only one letter difference but it makes all the difference

JeremyCorbynsBeard · 03/01/2019 18:28

How about Marlena? That would be better for pronunciation.

Nnnnnineteen · 03/01/2019 18:55

The pronunciation you like, i would spell Marlene, as in 'on the wall'. Much nicer than Boycie's way!

Mesmeri · 03/01/2019 18:59

Where I live, that name is spelled Milena and pronounced mee lay nah

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/01/2019 19:52

How about Mirela or Miruna?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/01/2019 20:56

Prefer Malin.

Sophronia · 03/01/2019 21:15

Marlene or Marlena is nicer

ZebraKid71 · 03/01/2019 21:53

I know a Marlena, which I think is pronounced how you intend - I do like it but unsure of the spelling/pronunciation issues.

ollhe · 03/01/2019 21:56

What PP said- it does sound a lot like melena which is a word for bloody/tarry poo used very frequently in hospital settings etc.

reallyanotherone · 03/01/2019 22:00

No. Too much like Melena. Which is poo

Melaena is partially digested blood in poo.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 04/01/2019 02:08

Sorry it reminds me of melena which as PPs have said is the medical word for black stool due to blood. This would be the first thing a lot of healthcare professionals think of unfortunately
