What do you think? Would you know how to pronounce it?

(We say ah-NOOK, to rhyme with Luke)

Accents are so variable - nothing 'right' or 'wrong', just different. In some accents, eg French and Scottish, Luke doesn't precisely rhyme with Anouk - the 'ou' sound is more similar to the 'u' sound in 'cute'. I'd probably pronounce Anouk as Ann-ook with the 'oo' sound the same as in 'cool' and the same stress on both syllables.

The name reminds me of the very stylish mid 20th cent French actress Anouk Aimee - there should be acute accent on the first e of her surname. It was her stage name.

I love this name. Don’t worry about pronunciation - people will pronounce it slightly differently depending upon where they are from, but it’s not a difficult name.
I do know one Anouk and she pronounces the second syllable with a shortened vowel sound as in “look”. But some people pronounce it with a longer vowel sound like you do - as in “zoom”.
It doesn’t really matter. The difference is fairly subtle.
A really lovely, underused name in the UK

Brilliant name OP.

HermioneWeasley · 02/01/2019 12:53

I like it

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2019 12:56

Not for me. I dislike the look of it & the sound.

ladybee28 · 02/01/2019 12:58

Loved this ever since I read Chocolat - and like you, OP, have always wondered if it's a bit too 'out there'.

But I think it's gorgeous Smile

CloserIAm2Fine · 02/01/2019 13:39

Lovely name!

MikeUniformMike · 02/01/2019 14:15

It's nice but it's a bit too French. I know Anya and so on are ok, so yes in theory but I think Ann/Anne on bc might be a better idea.

Juliet89 · 02/01/2019 16:20

Thanks, we love it too but we were worried she might get “an-owk” pronunciation. I don’t mind either of the two pronunciations mentioned above.

I love it, go for it!

MikeUniformMike · 02/01/2019 18:20

I doubt that anyone would say AnOwk.
And even if you called your baby Jane or Mark someone would get it wrong.
Anoushka is quite popular and it has similarities with Anouk. Go for it.

daisypond · 02/01/2019 18:24

I like it.

nocluenoidea · 02/01/2019 21:31

I know an Anouk and it's pronounced Ann-ook (ook rhyming with hook). In fact, she (and her family!) get very annoyed if people pronounce it to rhyme with Luke!

Not a name that has grown on me, it's too harsh and abrupt

Peachbubble · 03/01/2019 08:04

I like it and would pronounce it with the long 'oo' sound.

Astronica · 03/01/2019 09:16

Lovely name, and pronunciation seems pretty straightforward, with the slight variation as described by a pp.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 03/01/2019 09:49

One of my favorite names of all time. Beautiful.

Juliet89 · 20/05/2019 17:44

Just updating to say: she is here and we went with it! I love it more every day, even though we’re getting a fair few confused looks Confused Thank you for your words of encouragement.
