Expecting a baby next year and finding it difficult to agree on a name for a boy. However, we both quite like Joel.

What are your thoughts on the name?

Lovely Smile

My son is called Saul which I would put in the same category - Old Testament, Jewish (we are not Jewish though)

Mumshappy · 14/12/2018 08:03

Its ok prefer joe joey with joseph as the full name

Ilovedotcotton · 14/12/2018 08:07

I love Joel, gorgeous name.

NameChange30 · 14/12/2018 08:07

PS I like it because it's unusual but not unheard of. And it just sounds nice.

Sophronia · 14/12/2018 11:19

I like it. It’s underused.

tammytoby · 14/12/2018 12:04

How is it pronounced? Jo-elle?

AuntieStella · 14/12/2018 12:05

Lovely name!

I say it Joal (to rhyme with coal)

FlumpyMummy · 14/12/2018 12:07

It could be pronounced either way. I would probably say it as coal with a j.

Thanks for your replies!

I like it, and like that it is not over-used.

CoverYourEarsTeam · 14/12/2018 12:33

I have two DSes and this was my no2 for both. Still kind of wish I had used it - classic, easy to say and spell while not particularly common. All boxes = ticked.
Gorgeous. Do it for me (some random on the inter webs).

Santababyclaus · 14/12/2018 13:50

👌

SnowyPaws5 · 14/12/2018 15:12

Absolutely love it.

pfwow · 14/12/2018 15:15

Classic. Easy to spell, can't be shortened, but can be nicknamed for when they are little, I love this name, it's a great choice. Not too close to Joe or Joseph to cause confusion. Works in lots of other languages too.

pfwow · 14/12/2018 15:16

I would say in English we should probably say Joal like coal but in French it's written Joël so should be said Jo elle.

SoftBlocks · 14/12/2018 15:20

I like it.

GinasGirl · 14/12/2018 17:08

We have a teen Joel and only know of one other. We pronounce it Joal, well everyone except his auntie and a cousin who call him jo-el 😄

tammytoby · 14/12/2018 17:10

When I see Joel my brain thinks Jo el. I'm surprised many pronounce it Joal..?!

ree348 · 14/12/2018 17:12

Love it!

Avegemitesandwich · 14/12/2018 17:15

I really like it and nearly used it, but the thing that put me off was the pronunciation - I couldn't figure out if it should be 'Jole' or 'Jo-el' (with no specific emphasis on the 'el' but slightly more separated than 'Jole' if that makes sense) and the more I kept saying it out loud, the more saying it pissed me off and annoyed me! So I figured I better not!

RavenWings · 14/12/2018 18:29

Love Joel.

foxtiger · 14/12/2018 20:05

Jo-el' (with no specific emphasis on the 'el' but slightly more separated than 'Jole' if that makes sense)

That's how I say it. Sort of more like Jo-ul than Jo-el really. I don't really like it as "Jole" to rhyme with coal. Nice name, but I probably wouldn't use it because it would bug me if people pronounced it differently from me!

NameChange30 · 14/12/2018 20:09

Yes I pronounce Joel like vegemite and fox do.

Since calling my son Saul I've been surprised to find that some people seem to have trouble pronouncing it. Rhymes with Paul, I thought most people knew that, but in my experience so far, they often don't!

finallychangedmyusername · 14/12/2018 20:10

Lovely name

tammytoby · 15/12/2018 08:49

Saul is easy to pronounce in comparison to Joel!

NameChange30 · 15/12/2018 09:26

Some people pronounce it more like "Soul" Sad
