Hello! Need some help with names please! I really love vintage sounding nicknames, but feel that I should give something longer and more substantial on the birth certificate. My options are:

Kitty - Katherine on the birth certificate (spelled with a K as it's my grandmother's name)

Nell/Nellie - Eleanor or Leonora on the birth certificate.

(Thought these two were cute because she could be Kitty/Nelly as a baby, Kate/Nora/Nell when a bit older, or use the full name if she wanted).

Clara

Connie - I adore this but I can't stand Constance! Could it work as a stand alone name?

Flora

Elizabeth - I love all the nicknames but is it too popular?

Nancy

Scarlett - always thought I'd name a daughter this as I love Gone with the wind but it's so popular now and my friend said it's considered chavvy in the UK (I don't live there so wasn't aware)

Beatrix - Bea for short. I don't like Beatrice for some reason!

Let's see how we get on with these and then I'll do a boys names thread later - already feeling overwhelmed so want to narrow them down one at a time!

Love Kitty/Katherine the most. Kit is also a great NN for when she's a bit older and an obvious follow-on from Kitty.

Elizabeth is not too popular, it's a classic with no many nn possibilities.

Scarlett is my only definite no on your list. I'd say it IS too popular.

Clara and Connie are my favourite on your list. I think Connie is ok as a 'stand alone' name.
Francesca is also a lovely name which has various shortenings - Fran/Frankie/Ceska

Peachbubble · 14/12/2018 06:45

I know 2 Connies, who are definitely Connie rather then Constance. I know a Kathleen, called Kitty. Also like Clara and Flora from your list.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/12/2018 09:52

Katherine and Nancy are my favourites, but I like Flora/Florrie too.

Astronica · 14/12/2018 12:30

What a great list! Elizabeth and Scarlett are both in the top 50 in the UK and Australia (US as well?) so if popularity bothers you I'd cross those off. Elizabeth is a beautiful classic but has been in the most popular names forever.

I don't like Connie, and prefer Clara with the Clair-ah pronunciation - but that is generally in the US. Nancy is sweet and up-beat if you feel that suits your daughter. My favourites are (in no particular order because I can't choose between them) Katherine/Kitty, Eleanor/Nell, Flora, Beatrix/Bea.

Fantastic list Smile not helpful but I genuinely love them all!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/12/2018 12:40

Flora is my fav in the list.

I dont think Nell/Nellie - Eleanor or Leonora on the birth certificate makes sense. Eleanor inevitably becomes Ellie, no one would default to Nell without being told, and Leonora would become Nora.

newrubylane · 14/12/2018 13:13

If you like Nell (which is also on my list!) you might consider Penelope (my absolute fave, but we have a P– surname so it's clunky) or Petronella (a bit more out there) instead. Nell is traditionally short of Eleanor though, and if you used it consistently I'm sure it would stick.

I like Katherine nn Kitty / Kit best

Katherine Scarlett would be lovely

Icklepup · 14/12/2018 15:14

Love Leonora and Nancy

MrsFoxPlus4 · 14/12/2018 16:33

I like them all & Connie is absolutely fine as a full name :)

CloserIAm2Fine · 14/12/2018 20:23

I adore Elizabeth with Libby as the nickname, it’s my all time favourite

Also like Kitty for Katherine

Charlotte isn’t on your list but has a very similar feel, Lottie is gorgeous but she could also be Charlie

PippaParty · 14/12/2018 20:37

Fredericka - Nn Freddie

I like all your names a lot, except Connie. It's fine if it was short for Constance, but you said you don't like that. Connie is far too much like cunny, so I'd really avoid it.

I would find it hard to pick a favourite between Katherine, Elizabeth, Flora, Beatrice and Eleanor. I love all of them. I like Nancy but as a short form for Anne. Like Scarlett too, but that's got a bit of a different feel to your other names.

PippaParty · 14/12/2018 20:42

The wonders of google - some great ones!

Love Nell and Nancy.

I think Nell is established enough to be on the birth certificate. I dislike Eleanor and if you put that or Leonora on the bc she’ll end up being called them a lot. Unless at school she’s officially Nell, in which case there’s no real point naming her something else.

Joinourclub · 14/12/2018 21:11

I think they are all great. I had a similar list myself!

I discounted Flora because of the margarine, Nell and Nora because I love them but I find Eleanor fuddy. I don’t really like Elizabeth either- though again it has great nick names.

I don’t think Scarlett is ‘chavy’ , the only little ones I have met have posh and cool mums.
