There was a girl in my school called *Dandi.
*
I was reminded of this the other day. I'd never questioned it before now but now I have... it's a bit of an odd name!

Has anyone ever heard this before? I've never heard it after her and have looked through baby names a lotHmm what does everyone think of it?

NotANotMan · 13/12/2018 19:21

I've heard Dandy a couple of times. I think it might be a gypsy name

ernjas · 13/12/2018 19:24

Definitely wasn't short for something. Definitely not sure what I think of it now I've heard it again.

Makes me think of dandruff!

GraceMarks · 13/12/2018 20:29

It's the sort of thing girls in the 80s called their ponies.

foxtiger · 15/12/2018 15:14

I've heard of someone in America whose DD's real name was Danielle and they called her Dandy and sometimes Dandelion. The only other explanation I can think of is that it was a name from another culture but you'd probably have guessed if it was!

treaclesoda · 15/12/2018 15:16

There was an actress called Dandy Nichols, think she was active in the 60s or thereabouts.

The other thing it makes me think of is Dandy Dinmomt Terrier

HoratioNightboy · 15/12/2018 16:57

Dand or Dandy are old Scottish short forms of Andrew, so I suppose that as some girls are named Andi or Andi, Dandi's not too far off.

I've also seen Dandina for a girl.

BabloHoney · 15/12/2018 17:00

I have heard it as a nickname for Alexandra

Triskaidekaphilia · 22/12/2018 00:58

Middle name Lion?
I kind of like Dandelion as a name, if you were quite hippyish and/or into floral names Grin
