We've always said we would use this name but I'd like to get others opinions as I'm doubting myself!

What about Digory? Like in the Chronicles of Narnia books.

VforVloodyHell · 06/12/2018 17:47

Millie and Sasha are human names given to pets (mine are Brian and Keith)

Rover, spot, Digby, lassie, patch are pet names given to humans.

JaneJeffer · 06/12/2018 17:54

First Lucky now Digby. What's wrong with Spot?

BoswellandForshort · 06/12/2018 17:54

When I was teaching, one of my colleagues went on maternity leave and had a son who she named Digby. The birth announcement went in the next school newsletter and the “naughty” boy in class started reading the newsletter out loud while I was getting the class to line up. He cleared his throat, spoke loud and clearly as he announced to the class: “We are pleased to tell you that Mrs Smith* has given birth to a baby boy called... DIGBY???” I’ve never forgotten the utter bafflement in his voice. Makes me laugh every time.

I’m sorry OP.

  • Not real name. The real name was far worse as it made the boy sound like a village. Think Digby Fields or Digby Down.
Carouselfish · 06/12/2018 18:05

It's a bit naice middle class to me, like Giles. If you like that sort of image, go for it.

Quarky · 06/12/2018 18:48

No, I think it sounds like the name of a character from a 1970s sitcom.

GrammerlyH · 06/12/2018 19:26

I love it! Also love Diggory. Wish I’d been brave enough to use it but had similar comments about my daughter’s name at the time so went for a more traditional name for my son. Couldn’t face the comments! Think it’s a brilliant name though. I also love Monty, which gets similar comments. Clearly I like dog’s names!

viques · 06/12/2018 19:51

I think it's a dogs name too, but not a beagle or a dachsie, in my mind Digby the dog is a lollopy red setter who will never grow out of chewing stuff, will have no recall skills and will always trip you up when walking on the lead.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/12/2018 19:59

Puts me in mind of a terribly naice but not very bright man who lives in the family pile and is socially awkward
Not my mate Digby, a sexy as hell (we are only mates honest Grin!), New Zealander, funny, outdoorsy, sporty and hugely popular with everyone he meets because he’s just an all round lovely bloke. So I say go for it OP Wink

Polkasq · 06/12/2018 20:14

I'm not keen on this style of name. IMO it would suit a blustery, pompous man.

Conventicle · 06/12/2018 20:34

In theory, I quite like it, it in practice my main association is Digby Jones, blustering business wanker and life peer. If there were other Digbys to dilute that identification, I wouldn’t mind it.

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2018 22:32

Do I like it? No. Horrible name.

Jorgezaunders · 06/12/2018 22:33

Nope

SoleBizzz · 06/12/2018 22:36

Digby was one of my relatives surname

Fairenuff · 06/12/2018 22:39

On Made in Chelsea Olivia's mum called Digby 'Big D' and asked her daughter 'is it?' so that's a bit ew too.

No. Just no.
Most definitely a dogs name. Human names translate well for pets. It rarely ( never) works the other way round.

Can you imagine seeing the name digby on a CV?

Chottie · 06/12/2018 22:46

For an old English sheep dog - yes
For a baby boy - no x 100 times

OccasionallyIncomplet · 06/12/2018 22:58

Digby? Wasn't he the biggest dog in the world? (Great film)

Didyeeaye · 06/12/2018 23:47

I immediately thought of a little Scottish terrier when I read the name Digby.

MrsChopper · 06/12/2018 23:50

I think it's awful. Reminds me of Digby Dragon (and not in a good way!)

RedDwarves · 07/12/2018 09:21

Digby is 100% the name of a dog and nothing else.

Astronica · 07/12/2018 13:27

I really like it. I've known a couple of Digbys, and think it works well.

Astronica · 07/12/2018 13:27

I would be impressed by seeing the name Digby on a CV.

gummibears · 07/12/2018 13:31

While it's not a name I would choose personally, I would love to meet a Digby. At least the name is more memorable than Jack A or Harry S.
