Sidonie

Have you heard of this name? (it’s pronounced Sid-oh-nee).

When I was at school I knew three girls called Sidonie, so to me it always seemed a very normal name like Sophie or Emily.

I did grow up in an area with a sizeable Jewish minority and these girls were all Jewish (I think), but having googled it I don’t think it’s an exclusively Jewish name. It seems to have French/Latin roots.

Dh says he likes it but has never heard of it before, and wonders whether it’s a little too unusual.

So - has anyone else heard of it? Would you use it?

It's a French name. I think it's lovely and would definitely use it.

Another French name I like is Solenne (Soh-len).

Winterwonderland12 · 30/11/2018 15:47

Yes, I know a Sidonie. Beautiful name!

Winterwonderland12 · 30/11/2018 15:48

Yes, I'd use it! Why not?

daisypond · 30/11/2018 15:50

Yes, I know the name, but I don't know anyone called it. I think of the French author Colette - it's her birth name. It's lovely.

LeeMiller · 30/11/2018 17:33

It's a nice name. I think it would quite likely be pronounced Sidney by lots of people though.

Winterwonderland12 · 30/11/2018 17:37

Sid-o-nie and Sydney sound so different!

SwedishEdith · 30/11/2018 17:41

Yes, I think of Colette as well (did her for French A level).

I love it but I can't imagine it being pronounced well in English.

Shadow1234 · 30/11/2018 19:22

Love it - beautiful name!

imonlyherefortheAIBU · 30/11/2018 19:30

This was asked not long ago and I still think at first look it's SiOhDine- it's just what I see first- spell it the normal way

imonlyherefortheAIBU · 30/11/2018 19:31

Sorry I just thought normal way was Sydney- I know several girls with this name spelt this way- never heard the other one

Ilovedotcotton · 30/11/2018 19:31

I know two Sidonies - neither is Jewish. It’s a lovely name.

duckling84 · 30/11/2018 19:34

I know two. They do occasionally get called sydney or sid though so be prepared for that

sue51 · 30/11/2018 20:44

Im not keen.

Marcipex · 30/11/2018 23:15

I know a lovely Greek girl called Sidonie.

DramaAlpaca · 30/11/2018 23:16

I like it very much.

KatherinaMinola · 30/11/2018 23:17

This was asked a few weeks ago so it's obviously getting more popular.

Lou0219 · 30/11/2018 23:45

I really like it, you can spell it that way it Sydney unless you wanted it to be pronounced slightly different. Go for it it’s lovely Smile

foxtiger · 01/12/2018 20:01

I like it.

Booboostwo · 01/12/2018 20:58

I know a Sidonie and no one pronounces it Sydney but we are in France. It’s a lovely name and really suits her.

MeganJ93 · 02/12/2018 15:15

I've never come across it in person but I've seen it online on other name sites. I don't really care for it. It's not a bad name. It just doesn't appeal to me personally.

Branleuse · 02/12/2018 15:17

Ive only heard it in France, but I think it works in english too

KarenWhite29 · 02/12/2018 15:19

I read it as an odd way to spell Sydney. I don't like it.

BuffaloCauliflower · 02/12/2018 15:20

I’ve heard of it and like it, but I’ve never met one. I don’t like Sydney for a girl, that’s very clearly a boys name. Go for it!

CleanBee · 02/12/2018 15:22

It’s definitely a French name (nickname Sido), it used to be a real old lady name like Ethel or Edith but perhaps it’s coming back now too.

explodingkitten · 02/12/2018 15:26

As long as you're not planning on moving to belgium. There's a famous comic series there and one of the characters is Sidonia. A little bit different but you wouldn't call your child Goofy or Daisy Duck in the UK.
