Tira?

For a girl, what do you think? It’s Scottish with Scandinavian roots meaning ‘Thor’s battle’ or ‘Land’. I had never heard of it being a Scottish name before but makes it more appealing to me, being Scottish myself.

What are your thoughts on it, please?

Too close to the word Tiara which wouldn't appeal to me. Tara or Kiera (or one of its multitude of alternative spellings) would be "safer" and prettier imo.

It means 'strip' in Spanish, as in 'tiras de pollo = chicken strips'. Possibly awkward if she fancies travelling later in life...

I immediately thought Tyra Banks. Sorry!

ZebraKid71 · 26/11/2018 01:32

What about thora if you like the meaning?

I'm not sure about tira, it just doesn't read right to me.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 26/11/2018 01:38

An awful lot like “tiara” was my first thought...

moredoll · 26/11/2018 01:42

Haven't heard it before and I'm Scottish. I think I could come to like it.
Is it Tye-ra or Tee-ra?

Choccywoccyhooha · 26/11/2018 01:43

I think it sounds really pretty and has a fabulously surfing meaning.

Choccywoccyhooha · 26/11/2018 01:43

*surfing??? Should say strong.

Am not being critical, but who says it's Scottish? There are a few good baby name websites, but most are rubbish.

Tira is a computer-games name: (many refs on Google)

Thyra or Tyra is a Scandinavian name www.behindthename.com/name/tyra
Also the name of a minor celebrity.

There were no babies called Tira or Thyra in Scotland last year www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/names/babies-first-names

There's a Thyra in The Last Kingdom (pronounced Too-ra) which is a Scandinavian name, and Thora is an option if you don't mind the Thora Hird association. How are you pronouncing Tira?
