Using Benny as a nickname for Benjamin?

OhComeOnRon · 23/11/2018 22:55

I don't know what sex my baby is and we are REALLY struggling with a boys name!!

I think Benjamin is ok- but would call them benny (from one of my favourite books 'her benny')- what do you think?

Any other suggestions? I LOVE
Joseph but my BIL beat me to it.

Benny is fine for a younger child but Ben is nicer for when he's older.

I have a Benjamin-he is a Ben/bunny/bubbles but NEVER a Benny-he hates it for some reason.

VisitorsEntrance · 23/11/2018 23:10

Benny just makes me think of Crossroads. But then that’s just my age

@VisitorsEntrance
Haha this is what my dad said! But I've never heard of it Grin

I also thought of Benny in Crossroads, as well as Benny Hill!

LouiseHumphreys81 · 24/11/2018 00:10

I have a Benjamin. He is in reception and is Ben at school, because he is learning to write his name and Ben is easier. He is often called Ben-d (bendy), as his middle name is Daniel. When he was a baby his big brother called him benjibob, no idea why but it stuck for a while, and sometimes he likes Benji.

Lurleene · 24/11/2018 00:16

I think Benji goes with Benjamin and Benny more with Benedict.

festivedramallama · 24/11/2018 00:23

Are you a Benny tied to a tree?... playground game
Benny from crossroads
Having a Benny means having a tantrum

llangennith · 24/11/2018 00:26

Ben or Benj or Benji but never Benny!

chronicplainjane · 24/11/2018 00:27

Benny is great if you have a child called Frank?

ZebraKid71 · 24/11/2018 00:28

I much prefer benji to benny.

Cuzcothellama · 24/11/2018 00:29

Or Bjorn...

MrsMattWillis · 24/11/2018 00:42

I have a baby Benjamin and his nickname is Benjy . Or it was for a few weeks, we actually call him something completely unrelated 🤣

Cbeebiesrehab · 24/11/2018 02:30

If you want to call him Benny, call him Benny! Those saying ‘never Benny’ why not? He may decide to go by Ben when he is older but when he’s a baby it’s your call.

AnnieOH1 · 24/11/2018 03:09

It made me think of Kelly Severide's father on Chicago Fire. I'm married to a Benjamin and just ask him if he's ever been called Benny, "no I don't think so" and when ask what he would think if someone did said "hmm, I think I'd be okay with it providing it wasn't every time..."

thefraggleontherock · 24/11/2018 03:11

My Benjamin is Ben or Benji, Benny is fine, it's never occurred to me though

IrisJoy · 24/11/2018 03:14

I used to go to college with a Benny. Some people called him Ben. Some Benny. He didn't mind as long as it wasn't Benjamin as that meant he was in trouble!
No other references spring to mind.

RonaldMcDonald · 24/11/2018 03:16

Benny is worse than Sailor
Every parent will think Benny Hill or Benny from Crossroads
Why?

Blocker · 24/11/2018 04:48

I have a brand new baby Benjamin! He's Benji to me, Ben to his older sisters and Dad.

I can't imagine using Benny as I'm just not a massive fan of the name, but if he wants to be called Benny as he grows up I may just have to grit my teeth and bear it

CloserIAm2Fine · 24/11/2018 15:16

Benjamin is lovely!

I prefer Ben or at a push Benji to benny personally. But Benny is quite cute for a young child. Using the full name Benjamin means he has options when he grows out of cutesy nicknames

percheron67 · 24/11/2018 15:26

Only if he wears a knitted hat.

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 16:00

It sounds like a perv's name to me. But I assume that's the Benny Hill connection I'm making. It's weird that Ben sounds great to me but Benny is a 'ugh, no'.

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 16:00

Benji was that shaggy dog in the 1980s.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 24/11/2018 17:21

Don't like Benny or Ben but love Benji and Benjamin.

ScabbyBabby · 24/11/2018 17:29

Gorgeous name, and we must have very similar taste as I have a Joseph, Benjamin and Reuben.

I think all of the shortenings are lovely. I think it's the name of someone who will achieve great things. Benjamin Franklin!
