Bailey for a boy?

I love the character of George Bailey in It's a Wonderful Life, and it's the first name of a great uncle. I really like the name but I don't know if it's a bit common (yes I'm a arse for saying that but I don't know how to say it in a non-arse way). Uncle Bailey was American so I think that makes a difference.

What's the MN consensus on Bailey for a boy?

We had a dog called Bailey if that helps make up your mind!

My nephews 19 and been called bailey all his life. A friends son is 14 and also called bailey. I’ve only ever heard it as a girls name in America. Where I live it’s very much about name.

DonaldDucksTowel · 15/11/2018 16:28

It’s a bit chavvy where I’m from

Knittink · 15/11/2018 16:33

I have taught quite a few Baileys. I do not make assumptions about kids on the basis of their name, but your 'I know I'm being an arse' assessment of the Bailey demographic is pretty accurate ime.

MargotLovedTom1 · 15/11/2018 16:38

I've never known a human Bailey, but do know a couple of dog ones.

sue51 · 15/11/2018 16:41

I would think of the Old Bailey or Bailey's Irish cream if I heard it. It doesn't seem like a first name for a person.

IHeartKingThistle · 15/11/2018 16:44

I've taught a few too and they've been lovely. It's such a gentle sounding name. I really like it.

happytobemrsg · 15/11/2018 16:46

To me Bailey sounds quite feminine. However, my DH knew a boy Bailey so to his it's a boy name. It's on his list for any future DS'

My nephew is one of the nicest, sweetest guys, he’s great fun and going to be a good man. He’s recently got an apprenticeship in engineering in the navy. I only know these two baileys so it’s not common where I live but I can see why some people would think it sounds ‘chavvy’ but tbh I think chavvy is more associated with a certain look/behaviour and as long as your not looking or acting like that they’ll not associate it with you or your son.

RavenWings · 15/11/2018 16:51

Reminds me of the liquer or a dog, tbh. It's not dreadful but it is a bit tacky.

craftymum01 · 15/11/2018 16:53

I've taught a boy Bailey and a girl Bailey. Both children suited their names and were very sweet. Neither were common :) I think it's a lovely name

pilates · 15/11/2018 16:58

Strongly dislike, but you probably wouldn’t like my taste in names, often called boring on here.

Shadow1234 · 15/11/2018 17:15

I actually like the name, but do prefer it for a girl.

percheron67 · 15/11/2018 17:20

I dislike surnames being used as first names. Also, Bailey's Irish Cream was my first thought.

sheet82 · 15/11/2018 17:21

Bit chavvy

Thanks for all the feedback!

Am I alone in thinking Party of Five?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 15/11/2018 21:01

I used to tutor a girl called Baileigh. Lovely name. Lovely girl.

NameChangeToAvoidBeingFound · 15/11/2018 21:06

@GemmeFatale that’s who my sister named my nephew after 😂 she thought he was gorgeous 😂 his little bother was named after an Australian actor/model in neighbors or home and away 😂

Thetigerwhocameto · 16/11/2018 00:14

I mainly know dogs called bailey and the children I know meet your arse thoughts...

Sorry it’s not one for me, but each to their own.

GoatYoga · 16/11/2018 06:08

It’s a dog name - perfect for a fat, black lab.

mathanxiety · 16/11/2018 06:13

All the golden retrievers I have known were called either Bailey or Sammy.

Alfie190 · 16/11/2018 06:18

Quite a nice name for a dog.

playftseforme · 16/11/2018 06:19

I know a 12 year old boy called Bailey (in Oz) and a labrador with the same name (in the UK) Grin

MikeUniformMike · 16/11/2018 06:40

Bailey has a sister called Shannon. A bit dated perhaps.
