Layla or Lyra?

I really like both names, and I can't seem to choose just one. Which one do you guys prefer? What kind of girl do you picture with the names?

P.S. I pronounce Lyra as Lee-rah, not Lie-rah.

Layla is nicer imo.

If you’re having to explain yourself now on the pronunciation of Lyra imagine having to do that every time you tell someone her name. Will that bother you if they pronounce it a different way?

missmouse101 · 11/11/2018 15:01

Layla at a push but not keen on either. Lyra looks like Lycra and surely most people will pronounce it Lye-ra?

Yesitwasmethistime · 11/11/2018 15:01

I would automatically say Lie-ra by the way, sorry.

Wolfiefan · 11/11/2018 15:02

I wouldn’t use Lyra if you pronounce it like that.

ScabbyBabby · 11/11/2018 15:02

I love Layla.

BumDisease · 11/11/2018 15:03

If you want her to be Lee-ra, dont call her Lyra.

TatianaLarina · 11/11/2018 15:05

Lyra is more sophisticated. I wouldn’t name anyone after a hackneyed pop song.

Icklepup · 11/11/2018 15:05

Layla and I would pronounce Lyra lie-ra

Vi0l3t · 11/11/2018 15:08

Layla but I’d choose Lyra if you pronounced it lie-ra

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 11/11/2018 15:08

I like both, but I think if you prefer that pronounciation for Lyra it would get very annoying very quickly having to repeat “it’s actually Lee-ra”

Gabbie0728 · 11/11/2018 15:11

The pronunciation Lie-rah does not bother me at all! I'm actually debating with myself if I should just say it that way (if Lyra's the name I eventually choose), because both pronunciations are correct.

Iv always thought Lyra was Lie-Ra so I’d say Layla

FekkoThePenguin · 11/11/2018 15:14

Layla gets me humming the song (which I really like) and Lyra makes me think of the books.

TatianaLarina · 11/11/2018 15:28

I prefer Lie ra personally.

starzig · 11/11/2018 15:29

Love Layla. But Lyra would be lycra without a c.

ReginaPhalange89 · 11/11/2018 16:32

I prefer Lyra but only if it's going to be pronounced lie-ra!

Shadow1234 · 11/11/2018 17:44

I really like both tbh. If I had to choose, it would probably be Lyra (but pronounced Lie-Rah.

SuperstarDJ · 11/11/2018 17:47

Layla.

The majority of people will pronounce Lyla as Lie-la not Lee-la so you’ll spend forever correcting people. If you want your DD called lee-la don’t call her Lyla.

Glumglowworm · 11/11/2018 17:55

My order of preference would be

Lyra pronounced Lie-ra
Layla
Lyra pronounced lee-ra

Elllicam · 11/11/2018 17:58

I’m the same as Glumgloworm

AnnaMagnani · 11/11/2018 18:00

Depends if you want her to be thought of as song or book really.

Polkasq · 11/11/2018 19:00

Layla

daisypond · 11/11/2018 19:10

I like Lyra, but pronounced Lie-rah - as in the constellation or the Philip Pullman character. It means Lyre, so Lee-rah would be odd. I like Layla as well. They're both good names. I'd probably go for Lyra (lie-rah).

elenaf · 11/11/2018 19:11

Y is not normally pronouced ee if it's the second or third letter in a word, so most people wouldn't think to pronounce Lyra as Lee-ra. Plus Lyra in Philip Pullman is Lie-ra. So I'd go with Layla rather than Lyra pronounced the Lee-ra way.

lyndar · 11/11/2018 19:12

Layla
