Any opinions on Benjamina? Considering adding it to our list.

I think Benji is a sweet nickname for a girl.

Really?

FindaPenny · 11/11/2018 14:06

Benji is a sweet nickname but not keen on Benjamina at all.... I know it is a real name, but sounds made up.

TheTempest · 11/11/2018 14:07

That’s what I call my nephew when I’m taking the piss (he’s 15!). I’m not keen on it as a proper name, sorry.

SuperstarDJ · 11/11/2018 14:07

I’m not keen. I think I’d just assume that you really wanted a boy and hadn’t got over the fact that you had a girl instead.

SemperIdem · 11/11/2018 14:07

Don’t be so ridiculous. It is hideous, in the same way Nigella is.

Endonia · 11/11/2018 14:08

There was a bake off contestant (winner?) a few years ago called Benjamina. I thought is suited her.

I like it! Could have Mina.

NannyR · 11/11/2018 14:17

Those sorts of names, like Thomasina, Wilhelmina etc always make me wonder whether the parents were secretly hoping for a boy and just stuck an -ina on the end of the chosen name when they got a daughter. (Lighthearted! I know that's not the reason for choosing the name)

BakedBeans47 · 11/11/2018 14:20

I quite like it. I also remember Benjamina from Bake Off who was lovely

Cynara · 11/11/2018 14:20

Coincidentally I've just watched Muppet Treasure Island with DS, with the wonderful Miss Piggy as Benjamina Gunn. It suited her beautifully, but I'm not sure about it's transferability to a baby human.

I call my mate Ben Benjamina taking the piss. I mean its not hideous. But does remind me somewhat of someone called benjamin being teased.

Sandsnake · 11/11/2018 14:27

NO

EggplantsForever · 11/11/2018 14:28

In Hebrew the word Ben means son and the whole name is sometimes understood as being derived from “the son of my suffering” (because his mother died in labor). There are some more positive interpretations but just since it’s starts with “Son of “ it might feel weird to give it to a girl.

The first winner of the Masterchef reboot is called Thomasina, is that who you are thinking of?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/11/2018 14:33

Nigella has sisters called Horatia and (the late) Thomasina. I think her parents maybe just liked that style of name...?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/11/2018 14:35

And Benjamina was indeed a GBBO contestant, in the last series on the Beeb...

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 11/11/2018 14:35

No, I remember Benjamina too (pic attached). She was lovely but it's not a name I can warm to, any more than Thomasina or Wilhelmina. Personally, I wouldn't want to have a name that might lead people who hadn't met me to assume I'm male. So much scope for awkwardness and confusion and tedious repetition of the 'Yes, it was my Mum's idea - she thought Benji would be a sweet nickname for a girl ...'

Haha, I love this comment!

starzig · 11/11/2018 14:49

Benji is nicer.

Ohyesiam · 11/11/2018 14:53

Not nice

llangennith · 11/11/2018 15:00

Sophronia · 11/11/2018 20:38

I quite like it, but then I like Thomasina and Wilhelmina too!

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/11/2018 21:01
