Seeing it written, my associations were 'polecat' and 'Poland' so that informed my (probably incorrect) stab at pronunciation...

I would instantly imagine some connection to Poland.

Also, presuming it’s pronounced Poe-lat, it sounds quite lack Polack, which is a racist slur for a Polish person.

Don’t like it I’m afraid.
