Would you tell someone they’ve misspelt their baby’s name?!

A colleague has recently announced the birth of ‘Pheobe’ on Facebook and have since referred to the baby as ‘Pheobe’ several times.

Would I be awful to gently suggest the correct spelling or just hope it’s picked up on when they register the birth?!

I saw someone on fb named their child Aoife

Not pronounced Ee-fuh though....

Nope. Pronounced Oafie...like Sophie without the S Hmm

Bobbiepin · 12/11/2018 18:33

It seems as though Irish names are increasingly popular in England at the moment, complete with butchered pronunciation. I love the name So

Bobbiepin · 12/11/2018 18:34

Sorry, phone fail. I love the name Soairse but would never use it because of a Sinead I knew in school who had endless problems (& because I'm not Irish in the slightest)

Soubriquet · 12/11/2018 18:39

I love the name Aoife but I wouldn’t use it either

  1. I’m not Irish
  2. I wouldn’t want me/my child go constantly say “not it’s not owfie it’s Ee-fuh”

Must be a lot easier in Irish communities

IStandWithPosie · 12/11/2018 18:47

I love the name Soairse

Saoirse.

wewillrememberthem · 12/11/2018 19:10

No, because they've spelt it how they like it. And with a name like phoebe or however they are spelling it, the child will go,through life having it spelt in all different ways!

Bobbiepin · 12/11/2018 19:10

@istandwithposie Good thing I won't use it then Grin

I thought Aoife was pronounced Eefa and not Ee-fu..?

ReginaPhalange89 · 12/11/2018 20:40

I think Aoife is quite common now that a lot of people would be able to spell it . Same as Niamh

CaptainCabinets · 12/11/2018 21:54

They’ve spelt it how they like it

But I don’t think they have! I honestly think they believe that is the correct spelling of ‘Phoebe’!

I did send a text congratulating them on the arrival of Phoebe. I’ve yet to see any more FB posts appear so watch this space! Blush

Aoife in an Irish accent generally would be pronounced E fa
soubriq Are being sarcastic?

UptownFlunk · 13/11/2018 01:36

This reminds me of when I was about 13 and read The Catcher in the Rye. I'd never seen the name Phoebe written down before so spent the whole of the novel thinking that the protagonist's sister's name was pronounced Phobe (rhymes with lobe). Oh, the shame when I realised. I won't tell you how I used to pronounce meringue when I read the Famous Five books. Blush

TallulahBetty · 13/11/2018 11:28

Ha. I'd never heard the name Hermione before Harry P. I'd say it Her-mee-own in my head Blush

TallulahBetty · 13/11/2018 11:28

Heard it out loud*

LasMeninas · 13/11/2018 12:35

Me too, Tallulah! It wasn't until about 4 books in and talking about it with my mum that I found out. And then I was like, well that sounds dumb, and just continued reading hermy-own in my head.

VisitorsEntrance · 13/11/2018 13:01

I thought it was Her-me-own too.

I remember a post years ago by someone on a different forum.
For a reason I don’t remember he had to give a presentation. One of the words in the presentation was antelope.
He’d only read the word before.
He had a sister called Penelope.......

LasMeninas · 13/11/2018 13:08

Haha. Fucking English language.

Cosmoa · 13/11/2018 14:15

I know of someone who used the name. Caoimhe but pronounced it 'Cay-oh-me' 😂

EmmaGeddon · 13/11/2018 14:21

Used to pronounce Hermione as Her-me-own too. Blush

And (not a name but even so) recipe as re-sype.

VisitorsEntrance · 13/11/2018 15:07

I had quite a long discussion with DH that segue was segway. (as in changing from one topic to another). He hadn't made the connection with the spoken and written words.

(in fairness to him I only discovered that when reading it here)

VisitorsEntrance · 13/11/2018 15:08

Caoimhe but pronounced it 'Cay-oh-me'

How should it be pronounced?

Shriek · 13/11/2018 15:13

...and how should scaiorsce be pronounced. I think it's s'or-sha

Soubriquet · 13/11/2018 15:19

Caoimhe is Kee-va

Shriek · 13/11/2018 15:24
