Would you tell someone they’ve misspelt their baby’s name?!

A colleague has recently announced the birth of ‘Pheobe’ on Facebook and have since referred to the baby as ‘Pheobe’ several times.

Would I be awful to gently suggest the correct spelling or just hope it’s picked up on when they register the birth?!

It used to be different years ago, my mum sent my dad to register my brother's birth and they had two names they couldn't decide on so she told him to surprise her.

Shriek · 09/11/2018 17:52

How long ago Blanche ?

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/11/2018 17:53

I once met a Bikayla. Her mum had told her dad to register Michaela but she had a cold at the time. And she remained Bikayla.

What? If Mum had a cold, so Dad (who presumably didn't) registered her, surely it would have been pronounced Michaela?

And who on earth comes away with an incorrectly spelt birth certificate, and instead of correcting the BC, calls their child a random collection of letters for their rest of their life?

What nonsense.

Mitzimaybe · 09/11/2018 17:59

@Shriek

This was normal years ago. The mum would stay in hospital for a week following the birth (special maternity hospital, not a general infirmary) and the dad registered the birth.

And on today’s episode of ‘Things That Never Happened’ Grin I suppose her sister was the famous La-a?

If the parents are married then either parent can register the birth.

If they are unmarried the father must be present if he wants his details to be included on the birth certificate..

nanini · 09/11/2018 18:33

I recently met a woman named Jennifer but spelt Jenipha.

GummyGoddess · 09/11/2018 18:33

Say something please! I have a stupidly spelt name and it is a total PITA correcting everyone. Think Salli instead of Sally.

Conventional spellings make life easier, I don't understand why someone thinks a 'pretty' spelling is worth a lifetime of irritation for their child (looking at you DM!).

CatkinToadflax · 09/11/2018 18:38

I have an aunt whose name is Rachael, as opposed to Rachel. Over the years I’ve come across a fair few other Rachaels too.

Recently though I’ve come across a couple of people with the spelling Racheal. I can’t get my head round it. It’s just wrong! Confused

toomuchhappyland · 09/11/2018 18:48

Rachael is the traditional English spelling, I believe.

Noodledoodlesandspud · 09/11/2018 18:49

The other day someone told me I'd spelt caleb wrong, it should be with a K. I pointed out it was originally spelt Caleb. She looked at me as though I was mad.

And yes I would very carefully ask them to confirm the spelling.

MaisyPops · 09/11/2018 18:50

CatkinToadflax
They're two genuine spellings of Rachel though. The 3rd version is simply wrong.

It's like in my school we have Daniel and Danyal. One is the English name and the other is the Islamic version of the same name.

Other names (random letter order, no particular etymology before it) are people being unaware or purposefully unique.

LoveAScaryTaleMe · 09/11/2018 19:02

Surely the spelling of names have evolved over the years. Do people question Clare/Claire, Tracey/Tracy, Sara/Sarah(pronounced the same way) Steven/Stephen, Stuart/Stewart, Jeff/ Geoff... I could go on all night.

BedsideCabinetisnotavailable · 09/11/2018 19:26

Send them the clip from Friends...

P for Phoebe
H for Hebe
O for Obee
E for Ebee
B for Bebe
E for Ebee

Never lets me get it wrong! 😉

IStandWithPosie · 09/11/2018 19:39

No! E as in “Ello there mate” Grin

BedsideCabinetisnotavailable · 09/11/2018 19:40

No! E as in “Ello there mate” **

That's what I meant!! 🤣🤣🤣

lebkuchenlover · 09/11/2018 20:41

What about Catherine morphing into Kathryn?

TatianaLarina · 09/11/2018 21:21

It was actually the other way: Greek Aikatherina/e (from katheros) -> Latin Katherina -> Catherine.

LaDaronne · 10/11/2018 11:10

yes the S in ghislaine is usually pronounced so it's the friend who's right not the poster who thinks it's wrong. guylaine is perhaps the name you're thinking of.

flirtybird · 11/11/2018 12:18

My daughters name is Tayler and that was the spelling I wanted.

ittakes2 · 11/11/2018 12:36

Just email them and ask them if its pronounced the same way as the other spelling. It might trigger them to think about it. I know lots of people change spelling these days but I think this might have been an error. My dad spelt my sister's name wrong in the same way - and it caused her no end of stress with legal documents as people assumed it was spelt the way it is pronounced.

petbear · 11/11/2018 12:38

OMG I would have to tell them. That spelling looks ridiculous.

InsomniacAnonymous · 11/11/2018 12:38

IHeartMarmiteToast "I have a Phoebe. I spelt it Phoebe in a fb group telling them of the birth and someone pointed it out gently. I had just made an error ..... I was tired!"

Are you still tired? Wink

Storm4star · 11/11/2018 12:44

I named my DS Malakai. It was the spelling I preferred at the time. Although everyone’s just always called him Mally!

clary · 11/11/2018 12:48

I taught Kristofer, Aimme (said Amy) and girls called Beau and Jaime.

If I knew Aimme's mum at birth I might have asked if they meant Aimee! I think with Pheobe I'd have to say something op.
