Which spelling do you prefer? I see Aaliyah used the most, but the original Arabic name is Aliya?

Do you have cultural connections?

Lulu2106 · 05/11/2018 15:17

My daughter is Aliya. I preferred that spelling. But I pronounce it al-ya.

HalfBloodPrincess · 05/11/2018 15:25

I thought they were different names rather that different spellings.

Aaliyah I’d pronounce ah-lee-ah whereas Aliya I’d pronounce ally-ah.

I’m Probably wrong though 😂 I don’t know anyone called either

Flamingosnbears · 05/11/2018 15:44

Aaliyah as its the original

Lulu2106 · 05/11/2018 15:50

I think a lot of people consider them the one name but with different spellings. Although they are pronounced differently. I named my daughter Al-ya not Aa-Leah. She mostly get called Aaliyah at school though. My own fault for spelling it with an 'i'.

Petitepamplemousse · 05/11/2018 21:51

Do you have Arabic heritage yourself? Aaliyah has quite ‘chavvy’ connotations these days, if you’re white - just being honest. If not, I think it’s betfer because it fits with the heritage of the name.

MrsA2015 · 05/11/2018 21:56

Aaliyah is best aa-liya

Notveryadventurousname · 05/11/2018 22:27

Know an Aalia (pronounced Ah-li-a). Very pretty name but also quite strong and simpler to write than your version. The one I know is in her 20's so must have been ahead of the curve.

DianaBlythe · 05/11/2018 22:38

I know an Alia of Polish heritage

RedDwarves · 06/11/2018 08:43

Aaliyah is the original, so that.

Aliya is definitely not the original.

Urbanbeetler · 06/11/2018 08:44

I like Alia.

Urbanbeetler · 06/11/2018 08:45

Arabic names are transliterated from another script so there is no right or wrong.

Lulu2106 · 06/11/2018 09:46

@RedDwarves Aaliyah is not the original Arabic spelling. The actual pronunciation of the name is al-ya not aa-Leah.
When it's spelt in the 'original' way of Aaliyah then it sounds like a different name.

CBA2RTFT · 07/11/2018 17:38

Prefer Aaliyah. I used this as a NN for my DD (not her actual name). I never had cause to write it down, though.

Westfacing · 07/11/2018 17:53

Neither - I prefer Alia.

Double A always looks wrong in written English, IMO.

CheeseToast5 · 07/11/2018 19:27

@Westfacing - really? You don't like Aaron or Isaac? You think they look wrong?

MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2018 20:43

Alia looks like Inter Alia. Potential teasing with words ending with -alia?

rach2713 · 09/11/2018 20:57

There is also a spelling of alayah..
