Surname as a middle name?

What are peoples thoughts on using a surname as a middle name? I want to give my baby girl my maiden name as her middle name. My dad passed away last week, this is my first baby and i am devastated that he won't meet her. I really want to honour him in her name but obviously can't use his first name as she is a girl. I only have sisters and we are married now so noone to carry on my wonderful dads name.

Sorry for your loss Flowers
Do it.
My DD and her 2 cousins each have my MILs maiden name as their middle names. MIL and her sisters brought up DH and his siblings (father was mostly absent) and MIL had no brothers to carry on their surname. DH and his siblings wanted to acknowledge them for everything they did for the family.

My middle name is is my Dad's grandparents surname. I love it.
Guess is depends on what the surname is though.

Sounds good or can you not make a double-barrelled surname? That's what I am going to do as I don't feel like a middle name is quite enough!

I know a few people who've done this. I don't think it's that unusual - and a lovely thing to do in the circumstances.

A friend of mine her middle name was Kelly. Wasn't til she was older she found out that was her dads last name (didn't know her daf until in her 20s)
Another friend, has two middle names, one is jaimez, which is her mums maiden name!
And another friend put her maiden name as her sons middle name too which is Lee as her surname didn't go well as a double barrel to husbands name
