Thoughts on this for a boy? Which spelling would you assume if you heard it spoken? One is Cornish (where the family is from) and one is Welsh (family history here too on both sides but a bit far back). Hal for short.

Are they pronounced the same? If so, I wouldn't know which was Cornish and which Welsh.

AliCanTea · 30/10/2018 08:41

Yes, pronounced the same. Hal to rhyme with pal and win/wyn is win. I would rather pick the spelling that most people would assume on hearing it if possible.

I would assume Halwyn was the Welsh one but I would pronounce them both the same.

florafawna · 30/10/2018 08:47

Yes, I'd also think Halwyn was the Welsh one.

Skylucy · 30/10/2018 08:48

If I heard it, I'd assume it was spelled "Halwyn".

AliCanTea · 30/10/2018 10:28

Thanks - I was thinking the Halwyn spelling might be more usual. Anyone like it / dislike it for any reason?

Also if it's too similar in sound to my name. see start of username :)

I've never come across it before but to me it is too much like Heulwen which is quite popular for a girl.

ThanksItHasPockets · 30/10/2018 10:58

I like Halwyn.

maerd · 30/10/2018 11:02

I was just about to say the same about it sounding similar to the girls name Heulwen. I like it though. I prefer the Halwyn spelling but I am welsh

LeeMiller · 30/10/2018 14:56

I would assume Halwyn was the Welsh one and slightly prefer that spelling, but if your Cornish connection is stronger I might be inclined to use that.

Cbeebiesrehab · 30/10/2018 15:45

Halwyn looks more ‘correct’ to me, but I am welsh. I quite like it. Hal reminds me of the film Shallow Hal but I’m sure I will be in the minority there.

Thank you! Good to see it's not being laughed out of town, especially by real Welsh people Blush
