Feel like finding a name we both like is impossible

Baby girl due in February

I love names Amelia, Isabella, Sophie, Sophia, Sienna, Aurora (and to shorten to Rory) but feel like they are too popular / there are too many of them

I also like Sienna, Aubrey, Rain, Summer, Priya but DH isn’t keen

DH loves Ruby. He also likes Cerys, Freida. I’m not really keen. Ruby is ok but I don’t love it.

I just feel like I don’t know how we’ll find a name and there are so few he likes. He’s a bit uncompromising about it which doesn’t help.

How do we find and agree on a name we both like? Will it be easier when she’s here??

Agree that "Amelia, Isabella, Sophie, Sophia, Sienna, Aurora " are too popular.

I used the pregnancy+ app which gives lists of the top 100 names globally for some inspiration. I recruited grandparents to research and make suggestions too.

You've loads of time though. My DH and I could only find one name we agreed on, then when my DS was born it didn't suit him. We didn't name him until he was a week old but both love the name.

mattia · 26/10/2018 19:33

I agree - Amelia, Isabella, Sophie, Sophia etc, they are far too overused imo.

Sienna is OK and Aurora nn Rory is lovely.

Ruby is OK, too and Cerys is lovely.
Not keen on Freida.

I'd just give it time, you've still got a few months. You'll find more names (there's tons you won't have even heard of out there) that you might like. Some that you don't like now might massively grow on you in the next few months! I wouldn't stress!

MN is good for suggestions too 😊

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 19:38

Freida is DH’s grandmother’s name which is partly why he likes it but I don’t like it unfortunately

Yes we do have time I suppose but it just feels like he doesn’t like any names that I like 🙈

I’m due early jan and the name game is very annoying!!
We can’t agree either. I wanted to pick 2 boys names and 2 girls names because I’m a believer that the name needs to suit the face so didn’t wanna fall in love with a name then it not suit the baby.
We’ve managed to pick girls names I think now (just decided today) but boys names are not happening.
I still feel like I’ve got loads of time though and do think once baby is born my partner will just give in and let me have whatever name I wanted 😂

TatianaLarina · 26/10/2018 19:57

I prefer Carys to Cerys. I’d go with that.

Ruby is a stripper name, cf also Sapphire and Pearl. I’d make him drop that.

Would he accept Freida as a middle name?

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 19:57

@harrypotterfan1604 I found boys names harder too so pleased now I know it’s a girl I concentrate on girl names!

Cerys is lovely and much less overused than the other options.

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 20:45

I just don’t like Cerys

How to pronounce Carys?

I don’t really want Frieda a middle name either but wouldn’t rule it out

I don’t think Ruby is a stripper name personally (I accept others might as someone else said that before on mumsnet) but it’s not the one

Ca - as in cat- ris.

It means beloved.

AutoFillUsername · 26/10/2018 20:49

Shame you don’t like Frieda, I think it’s a strong and brilliant name.

I think you just have to keep looking as neither of you can force a name on the other.

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 20:50

@TatianaLarina 🤔 I think I quite like that!

OP posts:
AliceRR · 26/10/2018 20:51

@AutoFillUsername You never know it might grow on me! I have already changed my name from time to time about different names.

TatianaLarina · 26/10/2018 20:52

I’m with you on Freida I’ve never liked it.

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 20:54

We both quite like Isla but again think it’s a bit too popular?

I think Camille and Ingrid perhaps but not in love with them

DH likes Clariss

We both like Madeleine

I kind of like Jules / Joules

Madeleine is glorious. Madeleine Frieda?

Lipsticktraces · 26/10/2018 21:00

Camille is a beautiful name, as Is Madeline. Unfortunately it now makes me think of Madeleine Mcann.

Jules is a nickname.

Lipsticktraces · 26/10/2018 21:00

And Joules is a clothing company!

hrd2018 · 26/10/2018 21:03

DH and I sat with the complete spreadsheet of names used in 2016 (thousands!) and deleted all the names we didn't want. We had three matches on our list! We used one for first name and one for middle name.

LethalWhite · 26/10/2018 21:05

Astrid?

Ruby is lovely, not stripper name (see bake off!)

Frieda is cool, like the Frieda Kahlo link

Maybe both write a top 10 of girls names and see if any match?

LethalWhite · 26/10/2018 21:06

Sienn is much more of a stripper name than Ruby for example

AliceRR · 26/10/2018 21:08

Madeleine makes me think of Madeleine McCann too 😕

Each making a list is a good idea. Might make DH broaden his horizons?

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 26/10/2018 21:09

If you both like Madeleine why not use that? It’s a lovely name.

Otherwise you could both write a list of a agreed number of names (say 10 each) then the other person could veto a limited number (say up to 6 each) and then see if there are any left over that you both like. Each of you might find that certain names grow on you and you go off others. Or when your DD is born one name will feel right.

You will find a name you both like. Just don’t let him bully you into using a name you don’t like. She’s your daughter too and you’ll be giving birth.

Oh and FWIW if you’re giving the baby his surname then why not consider a middle name from your side of the family?

crunchtime · 26/10/2018 21:10

I think you should all stop worrying about how popular a name is.
All that matters is whether or not you like a name.
Having an unusual name is vastly over rated. I say this as someone with an unusual name who could never get pencils with their names on!
Your child is special and unique because of their personality and who they are.. not because of their name.
