A friend of mine is due in a few weeks with a girl - she's set on the name Panda. I questioned it at first, & she is insistent that it is no different to the increasingly used names Bear, Fox, Wolf etc, etc... I have got used to it and it is slightly growing on me but still can't shake the thought that she's going to get hurt at bad reactions!! Does anyone on here having anything positive to say about it? 😂

(I have suggested Pandora nn Panda but she's not sold at all) Hmm

Just no.
I would be unable to not tell a friend she was being ridiculous.
A panda is cute but quite a ridiculous animal too- so it’s a no from me.
Poor bloody kid.

rainbowtrain · 20/10/2018 09:28

No please. I usually think your baby your name but.

Aprilislonggone · 20/10/2018 09:30

Woman on x factor called Panda, she isn't from the UK.
Your friend obviously doesn't know the workings of a school.....

HopeGarden · 20/10/2018 09:53

I think it’s a very silly name to give a child.

But people do tend to try and be polite about these things face to face, so your friend may not hear too many negative things when she’s introducing baby Panda to people.

EvieV28 · 20/10/2018 09:59

It only works as a nickname for Pandora, eeek!

AtticaRose · 20/10/2018 10:02

As you asked for anything positive whatsoever - it's also the name of an (extremely obscure) ancient Italian goddess of the spring. Also associated with hospitality and charity.

The goddess is also known as Empanda and Juno Panda.

Make of that what you will!

Doyoumind · 20/10/2018 10:03

Just because some animals are used as names doesn't mean all can be. Ask her if she things it would be ok to call a child Dog or Rat or Horse.

Cachailleacha · 20/10/2018 10:04

Pandas sit around eating all day. Wouldn't call a child that.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 20/10/2018 10:05

I have a relative who’s Pandora nn Panda and it’s lovely, but as a stand alone name it’s pretty. You can’t do much about your friend’s choices though unfortunately.

Muddlingalongalone · 20/10/2018 10:07

Is anyone else envisaging the next incarnation of baby shark?
Baby panda do doo doo doo....mummy panda doo doo doo do😂

Awful - nn to Pandora possibly although personally I wouldn't.

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 20/10/2018 10:08

I quite like Empanda! Could also be Em or Emmie if she wanted a change when she was older.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 20/10/2018 10:08

It’s pretty silly* that should have said

FekkoTheLawyer · 20/10/2018 10:09

She's winding you up. Suggest aardvark.

FekkoTheLawyer · 20/10/2018 10:11

I'd be so excited of someone said they were bringing 'baby panda' to meet me. The I'd be very disappointed to meet a human baby.🐼

Sunshiness · 20/10/2018 10:19

Aardvark! Grin

ReginaPhalange89 · 20/10/2018 10:23

Wait a minute.... Bear, fox and wolf are growing in popularity? 🤔 Jeez .

No. Panda is awful, as are Bear fox and wolf. Nicknames maybe, not official names. That's just embarrassing. Cringe at the thought of introducing yourself at interviews or writing the name Panda on any legal documents 😳

IgnoranceIsStrength · 20/10/2018 10:26

Terrible...stupid animal and a stupid name.

TooTrueToBeGood · 20/10/2018 10:31

I wouldn't if she's hoping for lots of grandchildren.

kaytee87 · 20/10/2018 10:34

Her chid will hate her for it.

witherwings · 20/10/2018 10:37

OMG No! It might be cute on a baby but imagine the person as an adult, it doesn't work at all.
The bear/Fox/wolf names that are popular now are celebrity kids, they won't have to worry about being taken seriously in a professional job.

AfterSchoolWorry · 20/10/2018 10:38

Prefer Panka.

PrincessTwilightStoleMyToddler · 20/10/2018 10:40

Shock is she definitely serious? Not pulling your leg? That is awful. (I’m one of those boring people that also thinks Bear, Fox and Wolf are bloody silly things to call a child).

I knew an Amanda who was called “Manda-Panda” (by her mum and dad) or sometimes just “Panda” (by her dad - not by anyone else ever), and she was pissed off enough about that. Panda as an actual name is appalling. Does anyone think there’s a chance the registrar might refuse to register it?

Quizeerascal · 20/10/2018 10:43

I have a friend called Amanda who is sometimes known as Panda as a nn- with her full approval, she also likes Pandas, getting Panda themed gifts etc. But Amanda is a lovely, classy name where as I can't quite see Panda as a fully grown woman. Does the child's father have an opinion in this? Perhaps if she at least has a normal middle name she'll have the option of using that.

Karachii · 20/10/2018 10:45

I know an Amanda who's called Panda by everyone. Including at work where she's a senior accountant.

Cosmoa · 20/10/2018 10:57

We almost went with Pandora because I loved the nn Panda but didn't in the end. Wasn't brave enough! My DD really wouldn't have suited it anyway.
