Sheila/Shelagh?

Is this name too old fashioned? I’ve been rewatching Call the Midwife and it caught my attention.

I quite like it, and can’t see how it’s too different sound wise from the Lila/Mila names that are so popular at the moment.

Willing to be told it’s awful though!

It is awful. However its also very chic and edgy now. Imagine a baby Shelagh. How cute would that be.
or Imaging her in a class full of Avas and Olivias. How much she would stand out. I'd go for it.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 17/10/2018 11:05

There’s also Síle which has would probably be seen as less old fashioned

ReginaPhalange89 · 17/10/2018 12:15

Oh no sorry it's awful 🙈

RiverTam · 17/10/2018 12:20

not keen at all.

Charm23 · 17/10/2018 12:23

I personally wouldn't. I'd much rather my children grow up with a name that's too popular (as I did and didn't give a hoot) than an awful old fashioned name. Or y'know, somewhere in between!

Hunlife · 17/10/2018 12:24

It's awful. Sorry. I think Shelagh looks even worse as well - for some reason, to me it looks very harsh spelt in Gaelic (I'm Irish BTW with children with Gaelic names)

RavenWings · 17/10/2018 12:25

Síle is nice, I think Sheila is very dated.

Peridot1 · 17/10/2018 12:29

I saw an article this week in an Irish on line publication and it was listed as one of the names that is almost extinct.

My mum was called Sheila. Although her name on her birth certificate was Julia. And her aunt who was the same age as her pretty much was also called Sheila! Weird and I never knew why!

Icklepup · 17/10/2018 12:33

It's horrible

greencatbluecat · 17/10/2018 12:33

Well most People called Sheila/Shelagh are now in their 70s/80s. This name is surely going to make a comeback soon. You would be ahead of the curve OP.

matley · 17/10/2018 12:50

Too dated IMO, sorry!!

Changedmynametoolikeyou · 17/10/2018 12:51

Síle is lovely.

RockinHippy · 17/10/2018 13:01

No, just no, some names just don't deserve resurrection, unless you hate your DCs

hamburgers · 17/10/2018 13:10

Noooo

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/10/2018 13:11

I feel like it should be in the ‘hipster cool’ camp with the Sybils and the Barbaras but it just doesn’t have an edge to it, so to speak. I don’t think it’s quite ‘old fashioned chic’ enough and still just sounds dowdy! Plus I’m a massive fan of a diminutive and I can’t think of a nice one for Sheila.

PickleForPresident · 17/10/2018 13:41

Hideous name

Tinty · 17/10/2018 13:50

It is not a pleasant name op (sorry to all the Sheila's out there). Also it is an Australian name for women, think Crocodile Dundee calling women Sheila's. Grin

DC2018 · 17/10/2018 14:38

Sorry but I really don't like it. Makes me think of a bland, chubby woman in a mundane office job x

daisypond · 17/10/2018 14:44

I really like it and I think it's due a comeback. It has a lovely sound, rather musical. You've just got to distant it from the associations of "old lady", but it's happened with other names, so why not this? I'd be more concerned about the Australian slang "sheila" for a woman, but even that isn't enough to put me off it.

Womanlikeme · 17/10/2018 14:51

It’s really bad.

MaybesAye · 17/10/2018 14:57

Peridot1 - Sìle or Sìleas (shee-liss) is the Scottish Gaidhlig for Julia. There was a bardess called Sìleas na Ceapaich of the MacDonalds of Keppoch and in English was Julia.

Peridot1 · 17/10/2018 15:24

MaybesAye - yes I knew Julia was the English. I’m Irish. My great-grandmother was Julia too. We were always just confused as to why my mum and her aunt of the same age were both called Sheila when one at least had Julia as the given name. It was always a bit confusing! Obviously they were both called after my great-grandmother but you would think they would have have one as Julia and one as Sheila. Might have been to do with independence etc. Not wanting to give such an English name.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 17/10/2018 15:45

Please don't.

Sophronia · 17/10/2018 15:52

I actually think it has a nice sound.

BackIntoTheSun · 17/10/2018 15:56

Makes me think of the Jamie T song 'Sheila goes out with her mate Stella...'
