Remus - is this too commonly associated with Harry Potter? I think it's a lovely name but not sure how others would see it. Hmm

Yes but he is the best character so don’t worry.

StompyDino · 09/10/2018 22:54

It’s not one of the ‘main’ characters so a lot of people wouldn’t make the link but I don’t think it’d be a bad thing if they did - as long as you don’t use Sirius James as the middle names!

It’s a lovely name 😊

bunnyrubble · 09/10/2018 22:57

Would you pronounce it Ree-mus or Ray-mus?

I've never even seen HP properly so don't know how it's pronounced on there Blush

Ree-mus.
It's a really nice name.

DramaAlpaca · 09/10/2018 23:01

It shouts Harry Potter to me. It will be many people's first association.

It's pronounced REE-mus.

Bessieham · 10/10/2018 00:17

My first association with it is Romulus and Remus (I.e. the twins raised by wolves; Romulus killed Remus and went on to found Rome).

Harry Potter Remus is named after that Remus.

Bessieham · 10/10/2018 00:18

And it’s definitely Ree-muss.

My first thought would be that you were classics-buffs/Roman fans!

Just in case you’re not aware...

RonniePickering · 10/10/2018 00:19

I’d also think of Romulus and Remus first.

I like it.

piggie88 · 10/10/2018 05:33

I associate it with Harry Potter but I love HP and love the name Remus. It’s on our list if we have a boy.
True that he isn’t a main character, so won’t be many people’s first thought, but he is one of the best.

Peachbubble · 10/10/2018 09:25

Wouldn't associate it with Harry Potter, but would with Romulus, who killed his twin brother, Remus.

JennyOnAPlate · 10/10/2018 09:34

I'm a massive Harry Potter fan so I would immediately associate it.

Methe · 10/10/2018 09:39

Fabulous name :)

SputnikBear · 10/10/2018 09:40

Wouldn’t associate it with HP at all.

GinIsIn · 10/10/2018 09:42

I think of the one who was murdered by his brother first.

UntilTheVeryEnd · 10/10/2018 09:51

I don’t think there is anything wrong with a HP association! They are amazing books that have inspired a generation so why not use a name from the novel. It is no different from using a name from Shakespeare, Austen etc.
Remus is a great name and he is associated with a great character, kind and caring and loyal, a wonderful namesake. I named my DS after a GOT villain and I own the association. I mainly did this because my first choice of Harry James was vetoed Angry by DH and DM.
Use the name, it’s great!

HoratioNightboy · 10/10/2018 09:59

I thought of Uncle Remus and the BrerRabbit stories - does that make me really really old? Also Romulus and Remus, but not HP as I'm not interested so don't really know anyone beyond the title character.

Yes to REEmus pronunciation.

Elderflower14 · 10/10/2018 10:34

I thought of Uncle Remus Remus here

Ohyesiam · 10/10/2018 10:42

I was named after Marianne Daschwood in Sense and Sensability. So if Jane Austin, why not JKR?
It’s a beautiful name, with classical associations ( the wolf connection was why JK chose it) , and Remus Lupin is the best character from my favourite HP book. He was loyal, brave, discerning and good at friendship.

Joeybee · 10/10/2018 10:54

It really is strongly associated with Harry Potter, you'd definitely have people comment about that. However, it's an awesome name, if you like it then go for it. People would get used to it over time anyway.

ferrier · 10/10/2018 10:57

No I don't think so. Hermione, Ginny, Severus, Hagrid, Bellatrix yes. But not Remus or even Albus.

daisypond · 10/10/2018 11:17

I would never think of Harry Potter! I'd think "founder of Rome" first, and then, some way behind, the "Uncle Remus" character of the African-American folk tales.
