Not sure if I'm being silly with this one but how do you pronounce Amos?

Ay- moss

Lovely name

princ3ssconsuelabananahammock · 09/10/2018 17:44

I’ve never heard of it but I’d pronounce it like the end of a spanish word a (like apple)- moss

LeeMiller · 09/10/2018 18:16

Ay (like day)- moss

bridgetreilly · 09/10/2018 18:19

a (like apple)- moss
That's how it's pronounced in Germany, and probably various other countries, but in the UK it's ay (as in day) - moss.

caoje · 09/10/2018 18:20

OK, thank you!! I've heard a few people pronounce it so that it rhymes with anus and wasn't sure if that was right!Hmm😂

It's a Biblical name. Ay-moss not A-mus 😂

Fink · 09/10/2018 18:24

It doesn't rhyme with anus because the stress pattern is different, but it's the same long a sound. The second syllable is moss rather than mus.

Ay (as in play) mos (as in the plant moss).

IDoLoveToBeBesideTheSeaside · 09/10/2018 18:45

Ay-moss

cojmum · 09/10/2018 19:10

I would say aye-moss

flowery · 09/10/2018 19:12

To rhyme with hay toss

squirrelnutkins1 · 09/10/2018 19:25

@flowery 😂

Sophronia · 09/10/2018 23:53

Ay-moss but I have heard Ay-mus

Bessieham · 10/10/2018 00:14

Ay-Moss (at least, that’s how they pronounce it in Harry Potter!)

RonniePickering · 10/10/2018 00:26

Who’s the Amos in Harry Potter? Are you thinking of Seamus?

(Although I’d pronounce Amos Ay-moss, nothing like Seamus).

flowery · 10/10/2018 06:32

Amos Diggory

Sunflower321 · 10/10/2018 07:03

In English probably Aymos
In other languages Amos

RancidOldHag · 10/10/2018 07:05

How you say it should be pretty clear from this old chestnut:

Knock knock
Who's there?
Amos
Amos who?
A mosquito

RedDwarves · 10/10/2018 08:59

Amos will be pronounced like "aymus" (or anus) in America.

But it should be fine in the UK.

RonniePickering · 10/10/2018 10:21

Cedric’s dad, of course! Thank you flowery.

Joeybee · 10/10/2018 10:55

Ay-mos

basquiat · 10/10/2018 12:24

To rhyme with gay boss.
