I love this name!! Not very popular at all on the name list though, only 70 babies named Odin in 2017. What do you think of the name?

Send a wind to turn the tide!

osa20 · 08/10/2018 16:38

Love it.

helpmum2003 · 08/10/2018 16:48

I'm afraid I don't like it. Just doesn't sound like a name and lots of teasing potential around being called 'odd'. And constant spelling/pronunciation issues....

What are the roots of the name? It sounds like it could be Nordic/old English?

You could consider a similar type of name...

Torin?
T(h)or?
Troy?

lionsgate18 · 08/10/2018 16:49

Love it

You want to name your kid after a character from a (currently) popular movie franchise?

TaurielTest · 08/10/2018 16:56

Erm, I think most people will have heard of Odin and know how to pronounce it!
I'm not sure I would use it myself - for the same reason I wouldn't call a child Zeus or Jupiter or other major god names, it feels a bit boastful somehow, plus I think of father-god figures as older men so it might feel weird on a child. Still a cool name though :)

daisyrosegem · 08/10/2018 16:58

@CaptSkippy sorry I'm obviously not up to date with movies.. which one are you referring to?

@helpmum2003 it's from Norse mythology

marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Odin

GulliverUnravels · 08/10/2018 17:00

Odin as in God of war and death? After whom Wednesday (Odin's day) is named? It's a bit dark for a baby isn't it? Confused

MissBartlettsconscience · 08/10/2018 17:00

There's a whole series of Marvel movies with Thor in them in which Odin has a bit part and is played by Anthony Hopkins.

daisyrosegem · 08/10/2018 17:00

@puddock hmm good point. Tbh, when DH suggested it, I thought it was just a cool name and didn't realise it had those connotations until I looked it up. But now it's the only name we can agree on!

MissBartlettsconscience · 08/10/2018 17:01

And there's American Gods as well.

daisyrosegem · 08/10/2018 17:01

Ok glad I asked all you wise people about the name!! 😂😂

buttyblahblah · 08/10/2018 17:02

I like it! It's a bold choice but sounds good.

daisyrosegem · 08/10/2018 17:02

Marvel stuff is lost on me... as you can tell!

I love names that stand out. However, it is a bit like calling him Zeus - a lot to live up to!

PsychedelicSheep · 08/10/2018 17:07

If he grows up to be a hench, big bearded Viking type then it would be just about ok.

If he grows up for be a speccy nerd working in accounts it would be utterly ridiculous.

It's just not worth the risk.

JeanPagett · 08/10/2018 17:15

Imagine if he can't grow a beard when he's older...

More importantly I'd worry that people would think you were followers of Odinism, a bastardisation of Norse religion by American right wing nutters. It's v big on "ethnic purity" etc Confused

brillopants · 08/10/2018 17:26

What about Loki?
It's more cheeky and affable than Odin. The trickster god.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/10/2018 17:28

However, it is a bit like calling him Zeus - a lot to live up to!

I know a Zeus, lovely boy. His siblings have really normal names which is a little odd.

TatianaLarina · 08/10/2018 17:31

Cool, why not.

Many more Thors and Lokis around.

daisyrosegem · 08/10/2018 17:31

@JeanPagett 😱😱 well that's off the table then!!

Gutted! Really liked the name itself. Would Eden be a bit feminine sounding for a boy?

OP posts:
daisyrosegem · 08/10/2018 17:33

@PsychedelicSheep my husband is extremely hair so there is every possibility!! 😂

OP posts:
Anasnake · 08/10/2018 17:33

Ragnor
Floki
Rollo
Bjorn
Ivor
Not Odin

osa20 · 08/10/2018 17:36

@daisyrosegem I love Eden for a boy. I don't think it's feminine - it's been on my favourite names list since the start of Celebs Go Dating, the guy on there suits it very well!
