It means a prickly shrub. That would put me off it as a name I’m afraid.

I know a little boy named Briar. I like it better for a girl, though. It's a nice nature name.

Love the sound of it, not sure that I would actually use it myself. However if Hazel, Willow etc are acceptable I don't see why this wouldn't be.

I like it. It's unfussy but memorable, and it sounds like a name even though I've not heard it before.

I was thinking for a girl. Already got a boys name! I didn't know it meant prickly shrub lol, I don't think that puts me off too much.

I think It sounds really pretty and not very popular. No it's not made up ppHmm

I love it paired with rose. Although I don't like how popular rose has become so probably isn't an option.

Rose was 60th for girls in England and Wales last year, according to darkgreener so not massively overdone.

It reminds me of the Brer Rabbit stories. Briar means a thicket of scrambling, thorny bushes like brambles, gorse or dog rose.

And Briar is not a shortening/'nickname' for Briony.
