How would you pronounce Naomi? And which do you prefer?

  1. Nay-OH-mee

  2. Nigh-OH-mee

  3. Nay-ah-mee

Also, would you have trouble spelling it?

Oh, and do you like it?!

Nay oh mee but I get all 3! Most people can spell it ok, the occasional weird pronunciation and spelling! Hmm

user1486076969 · 06/10/2018 22:20

Pronouncing it - no problem i.e Nigh Oh May(or Mee)......spelling it another problem altogether!

naichick · 06/10/2018 22:51

@chickaaan my mum says Nair mee too! Nigh oh mee is just not right or maybe I’ve been saying my name wrong all this time!

thegreylady · 06/10/2018 23:05

I like it but my niece’s dd is called Gnome at school which she hates.

RedDwarves · 06/10/2018 23:09

Option 1: Nay-oh-me.

I hate "Nigh-oh-me", and have never heard your third option.

Charley50 · 07/10/2018 00:07

2nd pronunciation and I like it.

AlliKaneErikson · 07/10/2018 00:52

I’ve known all three but prefer no1.

firsttimebabybirther · 07/10/2018 01:18

Nigh - oh - may

Shadow1234 · 07/10/2018 03:18

I would pronounce it number 2.

I Know 2 girls with this name, and they also go by number 2 pronounciation.

thighofrelief · 07/10/2018 03:27

I would say NAY uh me - got mixed up with the numbering system sorry.

I love the name but only how i say it. I couldn't use a name with a changeable pronounciation though in case i got stabby.

jmh740 · 07/10/2018 03:35

Nigh oh me for me I would have to think about spelling it before I wrote it down and I wouldn't assume it was Jewish

Polkasq · 07/10/2018 05:01

NAY-o-me.

Sashkin · 07/10/2018 05:23

Naomi Campbell - Nigh OH me
Friend of mine (Japanese) - NAY ami

I have no idea which one is “right”

Sashkin · 07/10/2018 05:23

And no, deffo not Jewish.

littlegecko · 07/10/2018 05:42

My daughter is Naomi.

I say Nay-oh-me.
Lots of people we know say Nigh-oh-me, and we have also heard Nayer-me.

She also has lots of nicknames- No-mi, Gnomes, Nim, Nam, Nom, Mi-mi etc !

I have always been open minded about the pronunciation and although I say Nay-oh-me, I've never corrected anybody.

My daughter (now a teenager) is the same and says she gets called so many versions/nicknames - she's not particularly bothered by how it's said. She did recently post a meme on Facebook about "so many people can't pronounce my name that I don't even know what my name is anymore" Grin.

I know I'm biased but it's a great name, and although it's a name that everybody has heard of, there are very few of them. My daughter loves it.

Sunshine365 · 07/10/2018 06:51

2 - that’s the pronunciation the Naomi’s I know use (London)

I always thought (I guess incorrectly going by this thread) that 1 was the American way of saying it as that’s the only place i’d ever heard it.

steppemum · 07/10/2018 06:57

NAY-uh-me

but I hear all 3.
and people won't adapt how they say it to how you want it pronounced I don't think.

I really like it, one of fav names actually.
No trouble spelling it

Flatasapancakenow · 07/10/2018 07:03

We had two in our call in primary school. All pupils teachers, their family and friends used number 2, as they did.

Saying that now I think about it and look at it written down number 1 makes more sense.
Maybe it's a regional thing as we are from Northern Ireland.

I wouldn't consider it Jewish, but I would consider it a biblical name.

RiddleyW · 07/10/2018 07:05

My cousin (in her 40s) is a Nair-me

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 07/10/2018 07:23

Have only ever pronounced it Nigh-oh-me. I’m a teacher and have come across a few over the years, they’ve never corrected me so maybe they’re all Nigh-oh-me or they were too polite/scared to correct me!

I like the French “Noemi” although that gets pronounced several different ways too!

ceecee32 · 07/10/2018 07:32

I had a great aunt whose name was Naomi, she was called Nommi

GreenFieldsofFrance · 07/10/2018 07:43

I know 2 Naomis, one Nay-oh-mee, one Ny-oh-mee. They just tell people which one they are if someone says it incorrectly on meeting them for the first time. I have a dd with one of the much debated names in MN (don't do it no one will ever pronounce or spell her name properly, the threads tend to get heated etc ...) and it is actually starting to become an issue - you just have to be the personality type that will correct people.

Mum2OneTeen · 07/10/2018 07:46

Nay-Ome-Ee

Great name, DDs sister's name

Mumtobe89 · 07/10/2018 15:25

I'm a Naomi too. Nay-oh-me
Can't stand Ni-oh-me

Some people pronounce it Nay-a-me which I don't mind. I've also had a couple of No-me's which is a bit odd.

In terms of spelling some people add an extra i in it...

UserHistory · 07/10/2018 15:29

I know a Nay-OH-me
But it’s shortened to Nooms
