How would you pronounce Naomi? And which do you prefer?

  1. Nay-OH-mee

  2. Nigh-OH-mee

  3. Nay-ah-mee

Also, would you have trouble spelling it?

Oh, and do you like it?!

They are sort of the same but my default pronunciation is definitely three syllables with the stress on the Nay - so the end rhymes with thingummy.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 06/10/2018 17:29

Nay Oh Mee. No problem spelling it.

HalfBloodPrincess · 06/10/2018 17:30

I know a 1 and a 2 so how I pronounce it depends on which one I’m talking or referring to.

Prefer #2 though

Dljlr · 06/10/2018 17:30

First pronounciation, no trouble spelling it, think it's the second ugliest girl's name after Lydia.

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/10/2018 17:31

Lots of people think it's my Dd's name when they see it written down, but her name is Niamh.

MountainPony · 06/10/2018 17:31

It matters not a bit, but would you assume a Naomi was Jewish?

OP posts:
RavenWings · 06/10/2018 17:32

No, I wouldn't think a Naomi was Jewish. It's fairly mainstream now in Ireland. Have never heard pronunciations 2 or 3 here, though.

greendale17 · 06/10/2018 17:35

2-Nigh-OH-mee

OutnumberedMama · 06/10/2018 17:38

Naomi here Smile I’m nay-oh-mee, can’t stand when it’s pronounced nay-uh-mee which is quite a lot tbh

bridgetreilly · 06/10/2018 17:52

NAY-oh-me. I do like it and have no difficulty spelling it. I don't like it, however, when people say NIGH-oh-me.

bridgetreilly · 06/10/2018 17:53

No, I wouldn't assume Jewish. It's pretty mainstream.

NoUnicornsToSeeHere · 06/10/2018 17:54

Closer to 1 than 2 but somewhere between the two.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 06/10/2018 17:57

Friends where you are... ?

If in U.K. it would be
Nay oh mee

Spanish pronounciation would be Naow mee.

It's ok. I feel a bit meh about it to be honest.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 06/10/2018 17:58

Sorry can't type!
I meant to say depends where you are. And by the UK I meant the south of England. Sorry!! Confused

areyoubeingserviced · 06/10/2018 17:59

It’s Nay oh me

papayya · 06/10/2018 18:00

Nigh oh mee

papayya · 06/10/2018 18:00

Lovely name x

Mountainsided · 06/10/2018 18:01

1 or 2, just luck which ever you prefer. You just correct people and the spelling, easy.

LittleBookofCalm · 06/10/2018 18:04

3, nay a me

LittleBookofCalm · 06/10/2018 18:05

i very much like it

TheLovelyOtherDinosaur · 06/10/2018 18:10

Nay-OH-mee.
Nigh-OH-mee sets my teeth on edge too.
Nair-mee sounds wrong

Sungura · 06/10/2018 18:19

Nay-OH- mee. Easily spelled. Any other pronunciation is a mis pronunciation as far as I'm concerned.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 06/10/2018 18:23

Nair-me. And no I wouldn't assume Jewish heritage.

finallychangedmyusername · 06/10/2018 18:27

Nay-OH-mee. Arguably my favourite girls name and top choice for a future DD.

Ni58 · 06/10/2018 18:38

Naomi here too!
I get all kinds of pronunciations and they’re all fine - I don’t correct people.
I call myself nay-oh-mee but my family say nair-mee. My nickname is Ni, pronounced to rhyme with by/my.
I’d rather have been a Sarah or an Emma or a Jane!
