How would you pronounce Naomi? And which do you prefer?

  1. Nay-OH-mee

  2. Nigh-OH-mee

  3. Nay-ah-mee

Also, would you have trouble spelling it?

Oh, and do you like it?!

Nay-omi. I don’t get where the nigh sound would come from.

Yonijust · 06/10/2018 18:44

Nerr-me.

HeronLanyon · 06/10/2018 18:48

No 1. Every now and then nearly say no 2 -no idea why. Have only ever known Naomis who pronounce it no 1 themselves.

mintich · 06/10/2018 18:56

1 and no problems spelling it

Decemberly · 06/10/2018 18:57

I’m a Naomi - 1 is correct and my preference, I don’t really mind if people use 2, but I cannot stand 3

Nay u mi (u as in under not as in useful)

SemperIdem · 06/10/2018 19:03

I assume 1.

Really don’t like 3, never come across it in real life.

Dairymilkmuncher · 06/10/2018 19:05

I always said number 2 way until I worked with one that kept going on every time I said it wrong and drilled the number 1 way of saying it. Fair enough, I thought that was right and now I have a relative that's number 3 way and I find almost impossible to not say it the way it was drilled in now.

What I don't get it why people get so upset when their name is said "wrong" I don't care how people say "dairy" so long I know it's me they're on about or want that's fine. My son has been taught the same, his own grandparent gets his name wrong and we just leave her to it. There was one day she realised and said herself it had been too many years to change what she calls him now

I know a Naomi who pronounces it

Now-Mee.

She told me the way to remember it it to think of the phrase "now me tits are hanging out"!! I found this hilarious and never pronounced it wrongly again.

Pinkprincess1978 · 06/10/2018 19:10

I pronounce it number 1 but have heard number 2 but never 3. I'm not overly keen on the name if I'm honest. I've not really met many called that I liked.

Casmama · 06/10/2018 19:10

I actually pronounce it the 2nd way and have had a mental blank on how to spell it- probably for that reason.
In future I will pronounce the first way and I moan is a good way to remember how to spell it!
I do quite like it.

gaggiagirl · 06/10/2018 19:15

Please don't pronounce it Nigh oh me. It makes me stabby. It's not spelled Niomi
Nay oh me.

ReginaPhalange89 · 06/10/2018 19:51

@gaggiagirl there are hundreds of names that aren't spelt as they're pronounced ! Lol

I say nigh, I think that's the majority of Scotland for you !

unicorncow · 06/10/2018 19:55

I'm from Scotland and would pronounce it Nigh-oh-may, no problems spelling it

StarryStarryArm · 06/10/2018 20:01

My sister is a Naomi. We always called her NAY-uh-me but she calls herself Nay-OH-mi now because that’s what she was always called at school. I bounce between the two Blush

basquiat · 06/10/2018 20:26

No. 1.

Easy to spell.

Would not assume Jewish at all.

I think you're overthinking it.

Fifthtimelucky · 06/10/2018 21:41

My preference is Nayer me, with the stress on the Nay. No problem spelling it and I wouldn't assume Jewish.

RoadrunnerMeepMeep · 06/10/2018 21:55

My dsis is called Naomi. Have always pronounced Nay-oh-me. Have heard it pronounced Nair-me too. Also, as she’s lived abroad it generally gets pronounced No-em-mee in the country where she lives. I like her name, in fact I helped choose it when she was born Smile

Snoopy90 · 06/10/2018 22:06

2 and think it's a lively name x

Snoopy90 · 06/10/2018 22:06

Lovely*

BellMcEnd · 06/10/2018 22:10

Nay oh mee.

Lovely lovely name. Was on my list for a girl. Maybe I’ll save it for my puppy?

NO MORE BABIES

E20mom · 06/10/2018 22:12

1

SneakySneaky · 06/10/2018 22:15

Number one, because I went to school with a girl who pronounced it that way. Also taught a little boy with a sister called Naomi who pronounced it the same way.

Lovely name. It’s on our list, pronounced that same way
