Bethany, Matilda, Violet

Bethany, Matilda, Violet. Thoughts on these names for DD2?

Is Bethany boring? This is DH's fave
Is Violet too 'faddy' and hard to say?
Is Matilda too popular?

And thoughts on a middle name - perhaps Florence? Or others?

Any other suggestions welcome. Thank you in advance

I like Bethany best, and no, it isn't boring! Violet is nice too. Not a fan of Matilda.

My daughter is called Bethany

Eeevvvveee · 06/10/2018 10:18

I think Bethany is a bit dated but it's quite pretty. Love violet and Matilda but vv popular! Could you adapt it a little to make it different (I don't mean make a yooneek spelling, more like take on a different varient like Mathilde, Tilda, Viola or Violetta?)

Sunflower321 · 06/10/2018 10:56

Bethany is a little dated/dull sounding, but Matilda is SO overused and will probably soon start to sound dated too.

I'd choose Violet, but I much prefer Violeta or Viola.

Sunflower321 · 06/10/2018 11:00

Or Valentina!

LeeMiller · 06/10/2018 11:26

Bethany is pretty, slightly dated but that means there will be less likely to be lots in the same class/school. Beth is beautiful.

Violet is ugly in my opinion, looks and sounds like violent and is dreadful when pronounced with two syllables not three. Very popular at the moment though, at least on MN!

Matilda is lovely, quite popular at the moment but more classic than the other two choices.

Florence works well with all three in my opinion. Beatrice has a similar feel, also Mary, Alice, Eleanor, Rosalind, Iris, Edith, Louisa.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/10/2018 11:42

Violet is very pretty but quite popular.
Same with Matilda.
I think I'd go with Bethany for reasons Lee stated.
Sometimes dated can be a good thing at least she'll stand out. It's better than being Violet A/B/C or Matilda D/E/F
MN ideas
obviously ones Bethany Violet/Matilda

I think Matilda and Violet are both so much stronger (and nicer) than Bethany which is quite weak in my opinion. I do prefer Violet to Matilda but like both

Panicmode1 · 06/10/2018 11:51

I'm biased because I have a (christened) Matilda, but she uses a nickname varation of it. She's 13 and there aren't so many in her age group, but it seems very popular now. It means 'battle mighty' which is very apt for my daughter!!

Violet always makes me think of Roald Dahl and unpleasant children and I'm not a fan of Bethany.....there are a couple of both in my children's school and neither were very pleasant so that has coloured my view of those names.

NorthernRunner · 06/10/2018 11:52

I like all of them but Violet is the nicest. Bethany and Matilda are a bit dull to me (sorry!)

pixieloux · 06/10/2018 12:58

My youngest is Violet so it’s clearly my favourite. Popularity depends on where you live, I suppose as it’s the least popular of our children’s names and sits at #365 on the charts where we live. Never understood the violent thing or the vile-let one either - if we ever got it, I’d probably just tell them to learn to pronounce the name properly lol.

Matilda would be my second pick. Bethany is nice enough but just doesn’t do anything for me personally.

Shadow1234 · 06/10/2018 14:01

Think Matilda is a lovely strong name. Dont like Violet or Bethany

Icklepup · 06/10/2018 14:07

Violet is lovely

TatianaLarina · 06/10/2018 15:02

Can’t stand Bethany.

Violet and Matilda are much better. Prefer Violet.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/10/2018 17:33

Bethany is my favourite though I don't love it. I do love Bethan however

Violet is ok

I used to love Matilda enough to use but it is so popular in my area that it has lost any shine it had

birthdayparty · 06/10/2018 17:40

I'm not keen on any of them, sorry! Bethany is probably by far my least favourite though. Violet would be the best at a push! Sorry!

bridgetreilly · 06/10/2018 17:46

I love Bethan but not Bethany. I would choose Matilda from your options. Not that popular, great nickname options, good strong traditional name.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/10/2018 18:30

Bethany is very 80/90s to me.
Violet - I just see violent.
Matilda - is lovely but prettt popular.

Sungura · 06/10/2018 18:39

I favour Bethany with Mathilda a distant second.

Sophronia · 06/10/2018 18:49

Bethany is lovely and underused at the moment. The other two are very ‘now’.

AtticaRose · 06/10/2018 18:51

I like both Bethany and Matilda. Violet is also nice, but the other two are among my favourites!

RoseMartha · 06/10/2018 19:00

I like Bethany best.

finallychangedmyusername · 06/10/2018 19:12

I really like all three names - hard to pick between them. Maybe Bethany as it's less popular?

Some combos:
Bethany Flora (I prefer Flora to Florence)
Violet Kate
Matilda Sophie (I like the subtle Roald Dahl link to two of his heroines here)

youarenotkiddingme · 06/10/2018 19:27

Matilda is my favourite.

Also like Bethany and it was one of my names when ds was born 14 hrs ago (well if he was a DD!)

Violet is nice but not a name I'd chose.

Bethany Florence
Matilda Rose
Bethany Violet
Florence Matilda
