Eferhild - have you ever heard of it?

My dh LOVES the name Eferhild for a girl. Apparently it’s a very old English name but I can find very little about it online and we don’t even know for sure how it’s pronounced!
He’s going with how it looks eg Eff er hild (as in hill with a d on the end).
Would be really interested to hear whether anyone’s ever heard of it or knows anything about it? And your thoughts on it as a name?

Matilde and Clothilde are much nicer. Brunhild/a and Otthild are also better.

SemperIdem · 02/10/2018 17:39

Elfrida is perhaps more useable?

Thanks for all your replies!
Some great info and views there. And believe me, I’m with those of you who are not a fan of the name! Just wanted to start by getting some reactions without people knowing my opinion of it 😄

I hadn’t even thought of the heifer issue but that’s put me off even more!

“if you can’t say it then you can’t use it” is spot on!
And I have already made that very point to him 😆

will definitely be having a good look at the links that have been sent, the fact that hild means battle makes sense as DH likes ‘warrior’ names so that’s probably what he googled when he found it 🙄

Anyway, keep the comments/info coming as it’s been really interesting to read them and if anyone has ever come across an Eferhild I’d love to know how she pronounces it!!
And thanks for all the alternative suggestions, I don’t love any yet but you never know, maybe one will turn out to be the one we actually agree on.... 🤣

I have to admit the first thing it made me think of was heifer. I wouldn't choose it.

Ballbags · 02/10/2018 18:23

Sounds like something from The Handmaid's Tale

TheEverywhereBear · 02/10/2018 18:24

I like unusual names but I do think some have fallen from favour for good reason. This is one of them. Sorry op.

UtterlyDesperate · 02/10/2018 18:29

OP, I'd just be grateful he's not suggesting Frideswide Grin

Dragonblossom · 02/10/2018 18:33

🤣
He’ll probably tell me that he loves Frideswide!!

Does sound old English - ie Aethelred, Brunhild era

LemonysSnicket · 02/10/2018 20:25

I love it, btw

DickensianHysteric · 02/10/2018 21:37

I actually quite like it, but not sure I could bring myself to use it. Eferhild and Adelheid would be great names for sisters though. Maybe I'll get cats! Wink

HelenaJustina · 02/10/2018 21:44

I knew a gorgeous Elfrieda which has a similar feel.

MadMaryBoddington · 02/10/2018 22:00

I like it actually. But it is far too close to ‘Heifer Child’ to use in RL. And there would be a lot Of eye rolling behind your back.
